* World Food Program USA has expanded its Board of Directors as it continues to grow capacity amid a dramatic, first-time-in-a-decade increase in chronic food insecurity. Randy Russell will serve as Board Chairman, Bonnie Raquet as Vice Chair, Larry Darrow as Board Secretary and Tony Fratto as Board Treasurer. * YEMEN: The WFP-chartered ship arrived at the port of Salif in northern Yemen on Sunday with enough food to feed 1.8 million people for a month. More ships are set to arrive in the coming days, and this follows the resumption of flights by the U.N. Humanitarian Air Service into the capital, Sana'a, on Saturday. WFP Executive Director Beasley has joined UN leaders to call for a total lifting (https://wfpusa.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d5f728f283d83325b67efcdbf&id=9f583e5f05&e=0ee65d5d27) of the blockade that threatens to plunge Yemen into famine. The country is heavily dependent on imports for food and the continuing impact of this blockade cannot be underestimated. The bulk of humanitarian assistance needs to enter via the port cities of Hodeidah and Salif. In November 2016, 70 percent of all Yemeni
imports entered the country through Hodeidah. WFP has more than doubled the number of people it reaches every month, from 3.5 million people in January to an average of 7 million people during the past three months. * BANGLADESH: A new survey by UNICEF, Action Against Hunger, Save the Children, UNHCR and WFP shows alarming malnutrition rates in the Kutupalong refugee camp in Ukhia, Bangladesh. Preliminary findings show that one in four Rohingya children — more than previously thought — is suffering from malnutrition. The survey shows a 7.5 percent prevalence of life-threatening acute malnutrition — a rate double that seen among Rohingya child refugees in May 2017. Maungdaw district in Myanmar, where many of the refugees have come from, was among the most vulnerable and chronically food-insecure areas in Myanmar even before the current outbreak of violence, with high rates of malnutrition. WFP is currently providing nutritional support by distributing SuperCereal Plus to more than 68,000 pregnant women and mothers of young children. Learn more.

* WFP and the National Institute of Disaster Management are developing a framework for the use of drones for emergency response in Mozambique, one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world. A workshop and simulation exercise convened experts from the humanitarian, government, academic and private sectors to define the framework for use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology for humanitarian purposes, formulate approaches to disaster response, and address safety and data protection risks. "Use of UAV technology will go a long way to provide more reliable and precise intelligence for real-time, life-saving decision-making," said Karin Manente, WFP's head of operations in Mozambique. * The risk of hunger could increase by up to 20 percent due to climate change by 2050 unless increased efforts are made to help the world's most vulnerable communities better adapt to extreme weather events such as drought and flooding. This according to a new report by WFP in partnership with the country of Sweden about the impact of these kinds of disasters on global food security.
