As part of our on-going effort to keep you informed about the AG races throughout the election season, we offer you this state-by-state election update. Links: 2. mailto:jfuller@democraticags.org _Alabama_ Former State Ethics Committee Chair James Anderson faces GOP nominee Luther Strange, a Birmingham attorney and former lobbyist who upset incumbent Republican Attorney General Troy King in the GOP primary. Anderson has repeatedly challenged Strange to release his tax returns to the public, which he is not required to do. Anderson received an “A” from NRA members for his strong defense of Second Amendment rights. _Alaska_ Current Attorney General Daniel Sullivan (R) was appointed in June of 2009 by former Governor Sarah Palin. Governor Parnell is polling well ahead of Democratic gubernatorial nominee Ethan Berkowitz in the race to determine who will appoint Alaska’s next attorney general. _Arizona_ Former Assistant Attorney General Felicia Rotellini is locked in a tight race with Superintendant of Public Instruction Thomas Horne (R). Rotellini has been endorsed by both the _Arizona Republic _and the _Arizona Daily Star_ one week out from the election, both citing her experience with the Attorney General’s office and her ability to act in a non-partisan manner. With Arizona’s squarely at the center of the national immigration debate and more than 15% of voters still undecided, we expect this race to go down the wire on election night. Links: 3. http://www.feliciaforarizona.com _Arkansas_ Attorney General Dustin McDaniel (D) does not have Republican opposition. _California_ Fresh off a fundraising visit from President Obama San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris (D) is locked in tight race with Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley (R). A _Los Angeles Times_/USC poll shows Cooley and Harris locked in a tight race. Cooley leads Harris by 5 points, with a 3 point margin of error, just three weeks out from the election, and with over 17% of likely voters still undecided.[4][1]DA Harris is focused on LA County – home to both her opponent and one-fourth of registered Democrats in the state. Links: 4. _Colorado_ Boulder County District Attorney Stan Garrett (D) is challenging current incumbent Attorney General John Suthers (R). _Connecticut_ Former State Senate Majority Leader George Jepsen (D) is aiming to succeed veteran Attorney General Richard Blumenthal (D). Jepsen and attorney Martha Dean (D) have faced off in two debates - both of which focused on their respective views on the role of the Attorney General. Jepsen argued that Dean’s attempts to limit the role of the attorney general are counterproductive to the interests of Connecticut consumers. _Delaware_ Attorney General Beau Biden (D) is running unopposed. _Florida_ Florida State Senator Dan Gelber (D) faces Hillsborough County prosecutor Pam Bondi (R) in this all important open seat contest. A recent Mason-Dixon poll gives Bondi a five point lead, with a 4 point margin of error, but indicates 21% of Florida voters remain undecided.[6]^^[2]Gelber has earned acclaim statewide with newspaper endorsements including the _Palm Beach Post_ and _Miami Herald_. The two candidates held a televised debate on October 16^th, touching on the major issues of the campaign, immigration, health care, and education. Links: 6. 7. http://www.dangelber.com _Georgia_ This year former Dougherty County District Attorney Ken Hodges (D) is facing Chairman of the Cobb County Board of Commissioners Sam Olens (R). A recent _Survey USA_ poll, conducted Oct. 21^st- 24^thof 601 among likely voters, has Olens at 50% and Hodges slightly over 37% percent.[8][3] An October 24^thdebate centered on the experience required to be Attorney General. Hodges reiterated throughout the night that he has tried over 150 jury trials in his legal career, while Olens is yet to ever try a case. Links: 8. 9. http://www.kenhodges.com _Hawaii_ Attorney General Mark Bennett (R) was appointed by outgoing Governor Linda Lingle (R). Current polls suggest Democrat Neil Abercrombie (D) is well positioned to pick up the governor’s mansion putting him in place to appoint a new Democratic attorney general. _Idaho_ Incumbent Attorney General Lawrence Wasden (R) is running unopposed in 201 for reelection. Wasden first won election to the post in 2002. _Illinois_ Attorney General Lisa Madigan (D) faces a trio of third party candidates this November as well as a challenge from Republican Stephen Kim. Kim is currently general counsel to Coils, Inc. - an electric components manufacturer in Illinois. An early October Suffolk University poll shows Madigan with a 49 point lead over Kim with only 18% of voters still undecided.[10][4] Links: 10. _Iowa_ Veteran Attorney General Tom Miller (D) faces a well funded challenge from Brenna Findley (R) - seven-year chief of staff to Congressman Steve King (R) in Washington, DC. During the October 20^thdebate both candidates discussed the health care legislation. Findley railed against the legislation as “unconstitutional” and promised to join the multi-state lawsuit to overturn it. Links: 11. http://www.iwoansformiller.com _Kansas_ Attorney General Steve Six (R) is locked in a close battle with State Senate Majority Leader Derek Schmidt (R). The two faced off in a debate on October 21^stthat touched on immigration, health care, texting while driving and women in the judiciary. Six pointed to the $46 million regained by the state from consumer and health care fraud cases during his tenure. Six also compared Schmidt’s single-issue campaign (health care) to that of former Attorney General Phil Kline who was derided for his singular focus on abortion clinics. Links: 12. http://www.stevesix.com _Maine_ Attorney General Janet Mills was appointed by the Maine legislature in January of 2009. _Maryland_ Attorney General Doug Gansler (D) is unopposed in the general election. _Massachusetts_ Attorney General Martha Coakley (D) will face Republican James McKenna (R) in November. McKenna is running as a write-in candidate in the general election. _Michigan_ Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton (D) faces former Judge Bill Schuette (R) in another open seat contest. _Public Policy Polling_ released a poll showing Schuette with a 7 point lead over Democratic candidate Leyton in mid September. The 43%-36% split between the candidates leaves over 22% of the voter’s still undecided going into the general election.[13][5]Soon after the poll was released the two candidates had their first and probably only debate. Leyton and Schuette sparred over their respective approaches to prosecuting drug companies. Links: 13. _Minnesota_ Incumbent Attorney General Lori Swanson (DFL) will defend her office as the MN attorney general in November. Swanson will face off against Republican latecomer R. Christopher Barden, a psychologist-lawyer from Edina, MN. Barden jumped into the race after Swanson refused to join the multi-state lawsuit challenging the recent passage of the health care reform bill. _Nebraska_ Incumbent Attorney General John Bruning (R) is running unopposed in 2010 for reelection. Bruning has been the Attorney General since he was initially elected in 2002. _Nevada_ Incumbent Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto (D) will will face Republican Travis Barrick - a private insurance attorney and an avid biker. He graduated from the University Of San Francisco School Of Law in 2002. Barrick was one of seven anti-abortion protesters arrested in July 1989 for blockading the clinic in La Mesa, Calif. A jury convicted them of misdemeanor trespassing and resisting arrest charges. He spent 45 days in jail. _New Hampshire_ Current Governor John Lynch (D) is seeking his fourth consecutive term as Governor. Lynch nominated current Attorney General Michael Delaney (D) in August of 2009 and he was confirmed unanimously by the Executive Council. Governor Lynch is outpacing challenger John Stephen (R) in nearly every poll in what appears to be a safe hold for the Democratic Governors Association. _New Mexico_ Attorney General Gary King (D) will face Matthew Chandler (R) – DA of the 9^thJudicial District of New Mexico, representing the citizens of Curry and Roosevelt Counties. Both candidates have been hitting the trail recently to discuss the state of the New Mexico Attorney General’s Office, voters across the state have resonated with the office under King as evidenced by a _Albuquerque Journal_ poll from early October showing General King with a 20 point lead. _New York_ After a classic New York style primary State Senator Eric Schneiderman (D is campaigning hard against Staten Island District Attorney Dan Donovan (R). Recent polls show Schneiderman with a clear lead over Donovan, polling 7 points ahead among 637 likely voters.[14][6] Schneiderman and Donovan went head to head on October 25^thin a televised debate that focused largely the “mess” in Albany. Links: 14. 15. http://www.ericschneiderman.com _North Dakota _ Fargo attorney Jean Boechler (D) will face incumbent Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem (R) in this November’s general election. Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem is seeking re-election in 2010. Stenehjem graduated from the University of North Dakota and received his law degree from the UND School of Law in 1977. _Ohio_ Recently profiled in the _Wall Street Journal_ for his tireless efforts, incumbent Attorney General Richard Cordray (D) continues his vigorous campaign to hold Wall Street accountable and crack down on fraudulent foreclosures. With only a week left in the campaign General Corday has earned endorsements from the _Columbus Dispatch, Dayton Daily News, _and the _Cleveland Plain Dealer_. Links: 16. http://www.cordrayforohio.com _Oklahoma_ Democratic nominee Jim Priest (D) faces former state senator Scott Pruitt (R) in the race to succeed veteran Attorney General Drew Edmondson (D). The University of Oklahoma hosted a debate between the two campaigns, in mind-October, featuring Priest and a representative from Scott Pruitt’s campaign. Democratic candidate Priest emphasized throughout the debate how his opponent is unqualified for the position, having spent zero time as an attorney. _Rhode Island_ A poll taken two weeks ago shows 39% of likely voters favor State Representative Peter Kilmartin (D) in the race to succeed outgoing Attorney General Patrick Lynch (D). The WJAR Channel 10 poll put Kilmartin well ahead of Republican Eric B. Wallin (15%), independent Keven A. McKenna (14%), Moderate Christopher Little (12%) and independent Robert Rainville (6%). Links: 17. http://www.peterkilmartin.com _South Carolina_ Columbia attorney Democrat Matthew Richardson will face Michael Alan Wilson, son of U.S. Rep Joe Wilson. The seat became vacant when Henry McMaster sought (and lost) the GOP nomination for governor. The two hopefuls will face off in a radio debate this coming Thursday. _South Dakota_ Incumbent Marty Jackley (R) was appointed to the position of Attorney General of South Dakota in 2009 by Governor Mike Rounds (R) to fill a vacancy left by Attorney General Larry Long. Long resigned after being appointed to the Second Judicial Circuit Court. In 2010 he faces his first opponent for the seat in former State Senator Ron Volesky (D). _Texas _ Attorney Barbara Ann Radnofsky (D) is challenging Republican incumbent Attorney General Greg Abbott (R). Radnofsky was endorsed by the _Dallas Morning News_. Abbott leads Radnofsky 56%-29% in a Texas Lyceum poll.[18][7]Texas has not yet had a formal debate for the Attorney General candidates, but a televised forum was hosted on October 16th. During the forum Radnofsky highlighted the importance of having an Attorney General who is not dependent on funding from Washington and will avoid “show lawsuits” in favor of actual issues facing Texans. No official debate has been scheduled and this may be the only meeting between the candidates. Links: 18. _Vermont_ Attorney General Bill Sorrell (D) has been re-elected six times. Attorney General Sorrell will face Aaron Toscano (R) in the general election. Sorrell and Toscano faced off in an early October debate hosted on Vermont Public Radio. General Sorrell focused on his six term record of consumer protection and prosecuting fraud cases, while Toscano highlighted the importance of law enforcement and protecting the Constitution above all else. _Wisconsin_ Trial attorney, and Ex-State Natural Resources Secretary Scott Hassett, (D) is challenging Republican incumbent J.B. Van Hollen (R). An early October debate between Van Hollen and Hassett focused on the recent scandal of a former Calumet County District Attorney who was caught “sexting” a victim in a domestic abuse case. The questions centered on how the Attorney General’s office reacted, and should act, in such a situation. Hassett reiterated that, if elected, he would attempt to rectify such breaches of victim’s rights and impropriety immediately. Hassett accused Van Hollen of trying to keep the issue from coming to light fully and not informing the victim of her rights against the DA. _Wyoming_ Current Democratic Governor Dave Freudenthal is term-limited leaving the fate of Attorney General Bruce Salzburg (D) to be decided by the new governor. Current polling shows Matt Mead the Republican candidate polling well above Leslie Peterson (D). _______________________ [19][1]Los Angeles Time/USC. October 13^th- 20^th.
