Monthly Newsletter from JVC Northwest with news, updates, resources, & job opportunities. JVC Northwest News Want to find or create FJV events in your area? Connect with our new staff members: Outreach and Events Coordinator Taylor Ciambra and Alumni Coordinator Anthony DeLorenzo! Taylor Ciambra served as a JV with Brave Heart Volunteers in Sitka, AK in 2014-15 and is originally from New Haven, Connecticut. As the Outreach and Events Coordinator, Taylor is helping former JVs in the five Northwest states stay connected with JVC Northwest. Taylor will work with alumni councils in Seattle and Portland to create fun and meaningful opportunities for connection as well as coordinating larger events for our growing community, like our May Seattle Event. As the new Alumni Coordinator, Anthony DeLorenzo (Newark, NJ ’08-09 and Portland, OR ’09-10) works with former JVs currently living outside the Northwest. Along with supporting alumni to build networks in their own cities, he will coordinate the Ruined Readers Book Club and the JV/FJV Mentoring Program. This is Anthony’s second time on the JVC Northwest staff, previously filling the role as one of the Program Coordinators in the Cascade Retreat Region from 2010-13. If you have feedback or ideas about how we can help you keep in contact with JVC Northwest and provide opportunities for community building in your area, or if you'd like to host an FJV gathering near you, connect with Taylor (outreach@jvcnorthwest.org) and Anthony (adelorenzo@jvcnorthwest.org) or via phone at 503-335-8202. Give Thanks on #GivingTuesday On Tuesday, November 28 JVC Northwest is once again participating in the global #GivingTuesday movement. On this global day of giving, your donation will have twice the impact thanks to the generosity of Sharon Bloudek (Woodburn, OR, ’97-98) and an anonymous donor who will match gifts up to $5,000. All gifts received will be used to support our JVs, JV EnCorps members, and those with whom they serve. Who should be the next JV? Encourage friends and family to apply! Know someone who’d be a great JV? Interested applicants can fill out this Online Interest Form to learn more; send the link to anyone who you think is a great candidate to be “ruined for life.” Fall Focus 2017: Extending the Table Electronic version of Focus now available online In this Fall edition of the Focus newsletter, we showcase the ways former JVs extend the table to others in service and community. Former JVs Madison Ashley (Anchorage, AK '16-17) and Maura Armsworthy (Anchorage, AK '95-96) reflect on their experiences working with refugees; Bernie Tadda (Ashland, MT '76-78) shares details from his community's reunion; plus, the 50th Anniversary of Fishstrips, our Annual Report, and photos of our newest JV communities! Click here to access the online version of this issue of Focus! Know an organization that could use a JV? Partner Agency Application now open Know any agencies where a Jesuit Volunteer can make a difference? We're seeking new partners for the 2018-19 program year focused on education, health, legal, housing, food access, ecological justice, domestic violence, and more. Applications are open now through Monday, November 27th. Click here for more information or contact JV Program Manager, Sarah Jones at sjones@jvcnorthwest.org or via phone at 503.335.8202. Do you have a blog, book, movie, podcast, song, poem, article, etc. you want to share? Email Anthony. When grief and trauma come barreling into life, how does one restore, renew, and rebuild a new sense of self? Social worker and educator Susan Hannifin-MacNab (Auburn, WA '92-93) tackled these difficult questions after her husband was killed suddenly, leaving her to pick up the pieces of her young family’s life. Susan’s extensive professional knowledge and deeply moving personal experience combine in A to Z Healing Toolbox: A Practical Guide for Navigating Grief and Trauma with Intention, an entire alphabet’s worth of proven, practical techniques to accompany you along your own healing journey. Over 400,000 immigrants disappear into a network of 250 jails and private prisons across the United States every year. CIVIC provides this map to find the facility closest to you and offers ways respond to this human rights crisis. Through their investigation of human and civil right violations, and connections made via their visitation programs, CIVIC is devoted to abolishing U.S. immigration detention, while ending the isolation of people currently suffering in this profit-driven system.
