By Mike Allen (@mikeallen; mallen@politico.com) and Daniel Lippman (@dlippman; dlippman@politico.com)

Good Saturday morning. TWEET DU JOUR - AP's Denver-based Western political reporter @NickRiccardi: "Nowadays the United States feels actually united only when some great musician dies." ... Mashable's Juana Summers (@jmsummers): "So thrilled to be joining the team at @CNNPolitics [as a political editor] on Monday!"

TOMORROW'S WASHPOST today - Outlook p. 3, "How Ford captured Reagan's delegates: Reagan biographer Craig Shirley revisits the maneuvering at the GOP's last open convention": "Ford's strategists knew they had to prevent Reagan from addressing the hall before voting began, since he was far better at giving a speech than the incumbent. They were determined to win the nomination on the first ballot, fearing that delegates they'd won during the primaries would succumb to Reagan's siren song. ...

"Ford had already dumped Vice President Nelson Rockefeller from the ticket [for Bob Dole], but the New York scion was on the floor, directing his supporters to back the president anyway to keep the party from lurching to the right. At one Rockefeller ripped a Reagan sign out of the hands of a North Carolina delegate, and a melee ensued on live television. In retaliation, a Utah delegate tore New York's phone out of its base. The phone was connected to the Ford high command. Rockefeller was later spotted gleefully holding the unattached phone over his head; some Reagan fans saw it as a metaphor for the old liberal being out of touch with his own party. ...

"On the first ballot on Wednesday, Aug. 18, the penultimate day of the convention, Ford got 1,187 votes to Reagan's 1,070. The incumbent president won just 57 votes more than he needed." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7e7ac8c318e68bd85829854ab090bd5f621300e579d7389fb166545b05a2270d

TOMORROW'S TIMES TODAY -- "Clinton's Campaign, Cautious but Confident, Begins Considering Running Mates," by NYT's Patrick Healy (posted 5 a.m.): "Among the names under discussion by Mrs. Clinton, Mr. Clinton and campaign advisers: Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, former governors from the key state of Virginia; Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio, who represents both a more liberal wing of the party and a swing state; former Gov. Deval Patrick of Massachusetts, a prominent African-American Democrat; and Thomas E. Perez, President Obama's labor secretary and a Hispanic civil rights lawyer. ...

"Mrs. Clinton is also open to a woman ... One obvious possibility is Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, who is hugely popular among progressive Democrats, though she has not been helpful to Mrs. Clinton's campaign, declining to endorse the former secretary of state. Still, Ms. Warren has not been ruled out ...

"The vetting ... will be led by James Hamilton, a longtime Washington lawyer who did so for the 2008 Obama campaign and other Democratic nominees ... Several Democratic allies say that during the search, the campaign will have to reckon with Mrs. Clinton's high unfavorability numbers, which may create pressure to choose an inspiring figure like Julián Castro, the federal housing secretary, a rising star in the party." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7e7ac8c318e68bd8686664db451ef1fe04ed51d7ea6e6f9c12eb7a1e2580012e

BARD DIED 400 years ago today. AP: "On April 23, 1616 (Old Style calendar), English poet and dramatist William Shakespeare died in Stratford-upon-Avon on what has traditionally been regarded as the 52nd anniversary of his birth in 1564."

--POTUS IN LONDON -- AP's Jill Lawless, "Royalty, Obama & fans mark 400 years since Shakespeare died": "Obama took a break from political talks in London to tour Shakespeare's Globe Theatre on Saturday, listening to Hamlet's 'To be or not to be' soliloquy and admiring the open-air venue - a recreation of the theater, built in 1599, where many of the Bard's plays were first performed." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7e7ac8c318e68bd86b1326bd2724911c568ee43d060e930b18993974bc705af3

--WHITE HOUSE POOL REPORTS from the WSJ's Colleen McCain Nelson: "After a 20-minute drive that included scenic views of the River Thames, the London Eye and the Houses of Parliament, President Obama's motorcade arrived at Shakespeare's Globe. ... [T]he president headed straight to the open-air theater for a quick tour and then a short performance. Obama and his tour guide stood on the stage chatting, as they surveyed the ornate replica of the original Globe Theatre. ... Obama asked a steady stream of questions, inquiring about what time performances generally occurred and seeking other details about Shakespeare. ... 'It was so nice to meet you,' the president said to the guide. 'You did a
great job.'

"Fifteen actors then took the stage for a brief performance. ... The president, Josh Earnest and Ben Rhodes stood in front of the stage during the performance. The president watched with rapt attention, a slight smile on his face. Obama was treated to a couple instrumental songs and excerpts from Hamlet, complete with a little 'to be or not to be ...' As the performance concluded, Obama said, 'Hey!' and began clapping. One of the actors told the president it had been an honor. 'Absolutely,' Obama said. 'I don't want it to stop. Apparently I have to work.' With that, the pool was led out of the theater. At 9:58, the president's motorcade was rolling."

Times A1, above fold, "RUMORS SWIRL AFTER PRINCE'S AUTOPSY: Details emerge about the private star's final days, including unconfirmed reports of an overdose," by Rebecca Keegan, Matt Pearce and Richard Winton: "At what is believed to be his final Paisley Park party on Saturday, Prince briefly appeared, showing off a new Yamaha piano and a purple guitar, according to two guests. ... He sat at the piano, leaving the audience wondering whether he would play - which he did. Just not one of his classics.

"'It was 'Chopsticks,'" [said] Brendan McGillicuddy, 35, a University of Minnesota doctoral student. 'It felt like this tease.... He gets up and he's laughing.' Prince improvised on the piano for two or three more minutes, but didn't play any of his hits, and didn't sing. He also joked about his hospitalization a day and a half before ... He told the audience that he had been feeling unwell during his Atlanta show. Prince soon got up to leave, but not before telling his audience: 'Save your prayers for a couple of days.' ** A message from PhRMA: A new report from IMS Health demonstrates how a competitive biopharmaceutical marketplace is working to control costs. The report found that net prices for brand medicines increased just 2.8 percent in 2015, down from 5.1 percent the prior year, as discounts and rebates negotiated by payers continue to rise sharply. The report also projects medicine spending growth will continue to moderate to 4 to 7 percent through 2020, in line with overall health care cost growth. Unfortunately, patients are not always benefiting from the discounts that insurance companies negotiate. A new report from Kaiser Family Foundation found that insurers are increasing patients'
out-of-pocket costs, including coinsurance and deductibles, more than they are paying in medical benefits - underscoring the need for policy solutions that empower and engage patients. Read more here. **
