Dear Hunter, I have been surrounded by strong women all my life – bold, courageous women who have changed the world in ways big and small, women who have dedicated their lives to doing good and serving God. Women like my mother and my mother-in-law, Libby Scruggs. Mrs. Scruggs passed away a few weeks ago at 89. She is easily the kindest, most soft-spoken, nonjudgmental, loving person I have met in my life. Her life was not always easy – she raised and unconditionally loved seven kids after her husband died when the youngest, Jeanne, my wife, was only four years old – but she had a very strong faith and volunteered in her community. What an example, what a blessing for Jeanne, for our kids and for me! Another one of those women is my sister, Maria. Maria has dedicated her career to women’s empowerment, economic entrepreneurship and social justice. Her programs, reports and films have shined a spotlight on issues faced by American women, from poverty, to health care, to Alzheimer’s disease. This year, we decided to team up for a special report on American moms – what they want for their families and what they are concerned about during this election season. What we learned was eye-opening. The Shriver Report Snapshot: Insight Into The Resilient American Mother (https://t.e2ma.net/click/dir6z/h9ytd/1cb9uk), released this week, takes the pulse of moms likely to vote for president and shows what moms want most from the presidential candidates. And the title of the report says it all. American moms are resilient. A couple of bullets from the poll worth highlighting are: Mothers of all political persuasions believe improving education is the number one task the next president should do to improve life for America’s children. Cutting funds for education is ranked among mothers’ greatest worries concerning what the next president might do, second only to starting a war. A resounding 83 percent of moms – Republicans, Democrats and Independents – said they would likely support a political candidate who is in favor of expanding quality early childhood education, which they believe is critical to America’s future. It’s clear that these moms know all kids deserve a strong start in life. This group of voters shouldn’t be ignored, as Save the Children President and CEO Carolyn Miles and I discussed in an op-ed this week in U.S. News & World Report (https://t.e2ma.net/click/dir6z/h9ytd/h5b9uk). I hope our presidential candidates take some time to listen to and learn from these moms. Many thanks, as always, for your support. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or feedback.
