SPRING FACULTY APPRECIATION BRUNCH: MAY 13 BLACK STUDENT UNION (BSU) ANNUAL GO-GO Other QUAKER QUOTE News Around the School US NEWS Principal's Letter MESSAGE FROM MAMADOU Dear Friends, We began the week with a Collection featuring Sidwell Friends parent Mei Xu, who had been invited by the Entrepreneur Club to speak about her experience founding the Chesapeake Bay Candle Company. On Wednesday, the weather held out, allowing our 9th graders to enjoy a day at the National Zoo, an annual field trip sponsored by the Upper School biology teachers. Also on Wednesday, our sophomores spent the morning taking a full-length, practice ACT exam, followed by an afternoon game of kickball and ice cream treats. Students will receive individualized score reports for the practice ACT in early June, along with access to a complete suite of online SAT and ACT preparation courses through our partner organization, Academic Approach. Students’ scores will not become part of the ACT record and cannot be used for college applications. Questions about the practice ACT may be directed to Director of College Counseling Lauren Carter. Many of our juniors and seniors sat for AP exams this past week and will sit for more AP exams this coming week. Please make sure your children get plenty of rest. The halls have been very quiet without our seniors, who are busy at work on their senior projects. Alas, the long farewell has begun! Happy Mother’s Day to all of our Sidwell Friends mothers! The agenda will focus on planning PA support for senior projects this year, and for School arts activities during the upcoming year. If you have ideas about ways to support student artists or increase the visibility of arts at Sidwell Friends, please come; if you are unable to join us, please e-mail your ideas to PA.Arts@sidwell.edu. AP EXAMS: SCHEDULE AND REMINDERS! This important notice is repeated from Mamadou's message: The AP Exams will take place May 2-13. Students taking afternoon AP exams are excused from morning classes. Students who take morning AP exams are asked to attend afternoon classes. Junior classes are canceled on May 4 and May 6 for the English and US History exams, respectively. Juniors who sit for these exams will be excused after the exams end, and juniors who are not taking these AP exams are excused from school on these days. ADMISSIONS UPDATE As the school year winds down, please be sure to notify Admissions (admissions@sidwell.edu) if there is a change to your child's enrollment for the 2016/17 school year. Thanks for keeping us informed! Events CELEBRATION OF SALLY SELBY Monday, May 16, at 7:00 p.m. in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room Please join us to celebrate Sally’s tenure at Sidwell Friends at the final All-School PA meeting on Monday, May 16, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Come be part of a special evening featuring serenades by the Middle School chorus and orchestra, a tribute from SFS parent, alum, and former English student of Sally's, Ali Mohamadi '94 -- and a few surprises, too! Sally has worked tirelessly to make our Middle School a place that supports the healthy social, emotional, and academic development of our children. Now is our chance to show our appreciation for those hours, months, and years of dedication. The program will be about one hour in length, preceded by a light supper from 7:00 to 7:30 p.m. and followed by a dessert reception. Free child care is available for school-age children. You may sign up when you register here. Don’t forget! Mark your calendars now to say your final farewells at one of the Goodbye Coffees with Sally on Friday, June 3, and Monday, June 6, from 7:45 to 8:30 a.m. on the Zartman House Terrace. A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, MAY 20-22 The last Upper School production of the 2015/16 theater season is Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Friday and Saturday shows are at 8:00 p.m.; the Sunday matinee is at 2:30 p.m. Check the Arts Page for ticket information. Student tickets are free, parking is free, and the talent is tremendous! Make your plans and get your tickets now. GAMETIME! Each varsity team has been celebrated, but there are still games to be played in league tournaments. To sign up, go to: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0d4aa8a728a31-sidwell12 Other QUAKER QUOTE "In the early years of induction of children from families of diverse backgrounds, there was an unstated assumption that they would fit into the ethos of the Wasp-ish upperclass setting. We did not have an appreciation for the uniqueness of different cultures and that the blend of values was going to far transcend what we had had before. . . . A homogeneous school cannot prepare students for tomorrow in a heterogeneous society." Earl Harrison, Sidwell Friends Head of School, 1978-1998; "The Impact of Increased Diversity Upon Independent School Governanace: A Case Study," a paper presented by Earl G. Harrison Jr. at the Interschool Program, Collegiate School, December 3, 1988. Quaker quotes are intended to deepen the understanding ?of Quakerism within the Sidwell Friends School community. Exploration and appreciation of the continuous opportunity for truth is key to Quaker belief. Questions and suggestions should be addressed to Cynthia Richie Terrell at ctcabin@gmail.com.
