The right to vote is one of the most precious rights we have. But in recent years, we have seen decisions from state houses to court houses that chip away at this fundamental right.

The Voting Rights Act helped our nation ensure all Americans can exercise their voting rights, especially in areas with a history of discrimination – until it was gutted by the Supreme Court in 2013. In fact, the success of the VRA was the very justification for its dismantling. According to a report from the Government Accountability Office, overly strict voter ID laws cut voter turnout among young people, seniors and people of color during the last presidential election – and Congress has done nothing to help.

Voters can only have justice if our voting system is just – and that cannot happen until the Voting Rights Act is restored.

Tell Congress now: Restore the Voting Rights Act and break down barriers to the ballot.

Since the Voting Rights Act was gutted, laws have appeared across the nation that claim to protect voters. However, we know what these laws, like so-called voter ID, really are: schemes that could prevent millions of citizens from exercising their right to vote. It’s happening here already. Viviette Applewhite marched for civil rights in the ’60s, but was denied her right to vote for the first time after Pennsylvania passed strict new voter ID laws before the 2012 election.

Congress has come together before, nearly unanimously, in support of the Voting Rights Act. It needs to happen again now – no more excuses. Claims that the law is no longer needed are an insult – just ask those who have been turned away from polling places.
