Climate change exists and human activities carry a major portion of the responsibility for the damage it has already caused. But that also means we are responsible for fixing this growing problem and we must do it together.

President Obama has proposed a substantial strategy that, if implemented, would take real steps toward reversing the impacts of climate change. The Clean Power Plan is already being attacked by the extreme right and we have a responsibility to fight back and support it.

Pennsylvanians take very seriously the deep and abiding obligation to protect our planet – so much so that it’s enshrined in our state constitution. Article 1, Section 27 says that “the people have a right to clean air, pure water, and to the preservation of the natural, scenic, historic, and esthetic values of the environment.”

But it’s not just about clean water and air for us, Robert. This world is in our care for our children and our children’s children. A recent study predicts that climate change will result in substantial increases in childhood malnutrition – by as much as 20 percent.

If we fail to pay attention to rising temperatures, melting glaciers, shifts in migratory bird patterns and more, we are also failing in our duties as stewards of the Earth. We are failing to leave future generations the planet they deserve.
