Mother's Day is an incredibly special time for my family. First, I'm so thankful for all of you who joined my own children, Nevie and Cody, in sending me well wishes on this special day.

But I'm reflecting much more today on the mothers who don't have my blessings. Growing up, my mom was my role model in many ways – not the least of which was her incredible ability to stretch a dollar. Not to mention, raising 8 kids, especially when my dad travelled, has got to be the hardest job on the planet!

My Mom worked part-time at the local community center. Instead of an hourly wage, she negotiated that all eight of her kids would have somewhere to go after school, so we'd have a safe place to play and learn to swim and enjoy childhood. That community center became the employer of me and several of my siblings.

Across Nevada, I meet so many families like my own who are forced to pitch in and piece together paychecks to make ends meet. And, this economy has made it harder and harder for many mothers to provide for their families, while also being at home when they're needed.

Nearly half of the workers in our state, 49% of private sector workers in Nevada, are not given earned sick days by their employers. Think about this for a single mother – it means when they're sick, or their child is sick, they have to make an incredibly tough choice of whether to muster through, lose a day's wages, have their child stay home alone, or be cared for by someone they may not know well. They shouldn't have to make that choice.

I'm honored to have your support in this race – it keeps me going every day. But what's most important is the work we have to do as a nation to give working mothers the chance they deserve at a better life. Our laws need to catch up to the meet the needs of working families.
