Dear Hunter, Regardless of country or culture, everywhere I go, people have been asking me two questions: “What do you think will happen with the U.S. presidential election?” and “Why hasn’t the global economy returned to pre-recession levels?” Inspired by the rich dialogue that always ensues, I have spent much of the last few months musing on these two highly important questions. One runs the risk of saying too much about the U.S. presidential election. Nonetheless, in “Election 2016: What Would George Washington Do?” http://www.global.atkearney.com/rs/ct.aspx?ct=24F76B1AD7E10AEDC1D180AFD029911FDCBE6C8CE9B229F174DC02010E8BBF76BA6A1781CB8A238A25423C6A9B515BE59BEED376490A1508E19B485189E00E80964A6 I discussed how today’s presidential candidates could learn a thing or two about authentic leadership from America’s forefathers. In early April, the IMF downgraded its global economic forecast (yet again) for the near-term and UNCTAD released new data showing a further slowdown in global trade in goods and services. Now in our eighth post-global recession year, the world has yet to return to normalcy. Yet, the warning signs grow stronger that we risk walking down the same path we tread in 2007. In my March Forbes column http://www.global.atkearney.com/rs/ct.aspx?ct=24F76B1AD7E10AEDC1D180AFD029911FDCBE7E81E2A538FC2192605C52DEA900FF5C1B85CDD91C8C200E0C25FC6740F29DEF8A016F151203EE901C7B84AF2480C44F8F5 , I discuss why strong leadership is needed to address the fundamental weaknesses that threaten to further undermine our fragile global economy. The Panama Papers scandal is another example of just how tenuous public confidence is in leaders worldwide. As more names are revealed, my latest Forbes column http://www.global.atkearney.com/rs/ct.aspx?ct=24F76B1AD7E10AEDC1D180AFD029911FDCBE7D88E9F10FFD7ADE02705FC9FC2DF6491685CC8A3B83707A302FFC6455F99DE6920178180D04FD8F407 notes the need to address the world’s biggest deficit – the institutional and leadership trust deficit. The consequences of not restoring trust in our major institutions and those that lead them are enormous. As always, I welcome your thoughts and am sending you my best wishes as I wrap up an around-the-world tour that enriched my appreciation for just how profound and universal are concerns about the authenticity, capability, and reliability of our global leaders.
