THE EDITORS: With the U.S. expecting its smallest corn harvest in 17
years, President Obama should suspend the 2005 mandate that gasoline
contain ethanol, almost all of which is derived from corn. Instead, he
should "let the demand for ethanol obey the laws of the market, rather
than the desires of the agricultural lobby." [Read more] And in
Israel, THE EDITORS write, why are officials now warning they might
launch an attack against Iran? "Using the campaign season to pull in
the U.S. makes tactical sense" for the Israeli government, but it also
risks damage to Israel's "most important strategic partnership."

JONATHAN WEIL: In reaching a $340 million settlement with Standard
Chartered, New York state regulator Benjamin Lawsky may have hijacked a
federal investigation. Still, "the public seems better off for it.
Lawsky's counterparts will now feel pressure to seek larger penalties
for their own money-laundering settlements with Standard Chartered."

STEPHEN CARTER: "Romney's plan is not 'mathematically impossible,' but
'politically impossible.' . . . Although Romney promises to cut all
tax rates by 20 percent and to eliminate unspecified deductions, he
would never touch the exclusion from taxation of either savings in
