Our students have returned full of energy and enthusiasm, excited to be reunited with their friends and teachers, and ready to jump into their studies. At Wednesday’s Upper School assembly, Head of School Bryan Garman assumed his former role as an historian and offered an informative presentation on Quakerism's origins and history in England as well as its history in the United States. Members of the Quaker Life Committee closed the program with a rousing round of Jeopardy: the Quaker Edition. Every year, we hold a series of grade-level Parent Coffees with Upper School administration. These morning gatherings, which take place from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. in the RLS Meeting Room, are an important means of communication between parents and the Upper School administrative team. It’s a chance for you to ask questions and raise issues. We welcome your input! Below are the dates for the first semester Parent Coffees: 9th grade parents: September 16, October 13 10th grade parents: October 14 11th grade parents: October 7 12th grade parents: October 4 Please remember that your child’s advisor is here as a resource for you as well as for your child. These are great community events for all! Events CHINA IN 2016: HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVES FROM SPECIALISTS Discussion panel on September 14, 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., Robert L. Smith Meeting Room This roundtable brings two former Zeidman lecturers---historian Jeffrey Wasserstrom and journalist Mei Fong---back to campus to join with others in a lively exchange of ideas. The theme of the session, inspired in part by 2016 being the 50th anniversary of the start of the Cultural Revolution and the 40th anniversary of Mao's death, is to look at how China has and hasn't changed since previous years ending with the numeral six. The panelists will make the case for the value---due to connections, continuities, contrasts, or a bit of each---in looking back from 2016 to one earlier year with a six at its end. After hearing from Wasserstrom (on echoes of 1946) and Fong (on continuities and ruptures since 2006), as well as thoughts on other “six" years from former Far Eastern Economic Review reporter and Congressional Research Service staffer Susan Lawrence, Richard McGregor of the Financial Times, we will move swiftly to questions and comments from the audience and a freeflowing exchange of opinions. The panel will be moderated by China analyst and Sidwell Friends parent Bill Bishop '86. The event runs from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. on September 14 and is open to the public. Mei Fong is the author of One Child: The Story of China’s Most Radical Experiment, on the effects of China’s one-child policy. She is currently a fellow at the New America Foundation and taught at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School. Prior to that, she was a Wall Street Journal China correspondent. She delivered the 34th Annual John Fisher Zeidman '79 Memorial Lecture. Susan Lawrence, former U.S. New & World Report Beijing Bureau Chief and former Senior China Correspondent for the Far Eastern Economic Review, is now Specialist in Asian Affairs at the Library of Congress Congressional Research Service. Jeffrey Wasserstrom is Chancellor’s Professor of History at UC Irvine, the editor fo the just-released Oxford Illustrated History of Modern China, and the author of books such as China in the 21st Century: What Everyone Needs to Know and, most recently, Eight Juxtapositions: China through Imperfect Analogies. NEXT-TO-NEW SALE COLLECTIONS AND VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES Sidwell Friends’ popular sale of quality used items is back, and we need your help to make this event more successful than ever! As always, there will be refreshments for fans and some SFS rally towels. GAMETIME! is a collaboration between the PA and the Athletics Department and promotes each varsity team once a season by encouraging fans across the community to attend and cheer for the hard-working Quakers together. A full fall schedule is posted on the calendar and was listed in the Back-to-School Announcements. The next event is volleyball on Friday, September 23, in the Athletic Center. DONATE BLOOD FOR ALL THE LITTLE REASONS! On Wednesday, September 28, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Sidwell Friends will be holding a blood drive for Children's National Medical Center. The bloodmobile will be parked on Zartman Circle. These drives are extremely important for the children who depend upon CNMC. The hemo/oncology department currently treats more than 1,400 kids who need blood transfusions. Sickle cell patients need transfusions every four to six weeks. You must sign up in advance. Click here to register online. Please make certain to go to the site and read the eligibility rules. Some restrictions include current medications or vaccinations, travel outside the United States (a precaution taken especially for Zika virus), dental work, weight, age, and general health. Donors must be healthy, at least 17 years old, and weigh more than 110 pounds. Please bring a photo ID with you, eat a meal (breakfast or lunch), and drink at least 16 ounces of water before you come. CELEBRATE 50 YEARS OF WILLIAM PENN HOUSE The Sidwell Friends community is invited to William Penn House’s 50th Anniversary and Day of Service on Saturday, October 8. Families, individuals, and groups of all ages are welcome to attend. Come enjoy fun, food, and fellowship to celebrate 50 years of service and activism in Washington, DC. The day will include hands-on projects supporting the William Penn Quaker Workcamps’ urban gardening program. In the tradition of Quaker service, participants honor the Light in others, build community, and make love visible. Enjoy a BBQ lunch, complete with a visit from William Penn himself! The event is free, but registration is required. Register by September 26 at http://williampennhouse.org/program/354. William Penn House is an important partner to Sidwell Friends students of all ages. In addition to traveling to New Orleans and West Virginia on WPH workcamps, many 5th, 6th, and 9th graders have helped plant community gardens in DC. PARENT OR GRANDPARENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: SEPT. 28 We are looking for volunteers on the Wisconsin Avenue campus between 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 28, to help prepare handbooks and print directories for distribution. Tasks include labeling, stuffing, and sorting envelopes. Coffee and a snack will be provided. If you can spare a few hours for this, please contact Kathi Webb (webbk@sidwell.edu) or sign up here. We will be working in the Campus Security building in the garage. Other QUAKER QUOTES AND QUESTIONS We have just had the first day of school. I’ve also heard Quakers talk about First Day School like it’s a thing. I assume this is referring to something different? First Day School is just the Quaker term for Sunday School. Early in the history of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), they decided to refer to days of the week by number---so Sunday became First Day, Monday became Second Day, and so on. This came about at a time when Quakers were re-examining practically any aspect of life that even remotely related to faith and religious practice. One issue that concerned them was how the common English names for days of the week (and some months of the year) were tied to pagan gods: Thursday = Thor’s Day, Saturday = Saturn’s Day, January = the month of Janus, March = the month of Mars, etc. Because they were monotheists who didn’t worship pagan gods, early Friends—and several other groups—adopted the numbering convention. You still see it used on some documents and hear it occasionally in speech, although modern Friends generally don’t seem bothered by the old pagan names. But as a child, I would commonly hear constructions along the lines of Thy mother was born on Seventh Day, Sixth-Month fourteenth, 1924. The particular usage “First Day School” persists, now almost as a lexical fossil, both thanks to habitual use of the term and because people do see a distinction between the intent of Quaker classes for kids and the intent of the kids’ classes run by many other faith communities. Quaker quotes alternate with questions about Quakerism in this newsletter feature. To ask a question about Quaker history or practice, e-mail the Sidwell Friends Quaker Life Committees’ authors at quakerquestions@sidwell.edu.
