To subscribe, please sign up here (http://bit.ly/ecs1s) . ** Obama's Turkey Talk ------------------------------------------------------------ The US today urged Turkish troops and Kurdish forces in northern Syria to halt their fighting, saying it hinders efforts to defeat the ISIS. But Turkey’s president vowed to press ahead with the military operation until ISIS and Kurdish Syrian fighters no longer pose a security threat to Ankara, as the AP reports (https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/middle_east/turkey-warns-of-more-strikes-if-syrian-kurds-dont-retreat/2016/08/29/6c86edb0-6dcd-11e6-993f-73c693a89820_story.html) . And, as Reuters reports (http://www.reuters.com/article/us-g20-china-obama-erdogan-idUSKCN11421W) , President Obama and Turkish President Erdogan will meet in China on September 4. Dive Deeper: CSIS’s Rebecca Hersman has authored a new Critical Questions (CSIS’s signature series of asked & answered short papers), “Unpacking Syria’s Chemical Weapons Problem (https://www.csis.org/analysis/unpacking-syrias-chemical-weapons-problem) .” ** Cease Fire ------------------------------------------------------------ A definitive bilateral cease-fire went into effect today in Colombia as the country’s largest rebel group began the process of congregating its forces while notifying the United Nations and the government of their locations. This is the first step leading to the ultimate disarmament of 7,000 fighters of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, a one-time tiny peasant movement that over the decades morphed into a Marxist guerrilla group that aimed to take power, as The Wall Street Journal’s Juan Forero and Kejal Vyas report (http://www.wsj.com/articles/cease-fire-between-colombia-and-farc-rebels-takes-effect-1472489964) . ** Latest Blow to Yemen ------------------------------------------------------------ ISIS claimed responsibility for a suicide car bombing today in Yemen that killed more than 50 people and provided the latest, brutal blow to an Arabian Peninsula nation besieged by war and poverty, as USA Today’s John Bacon reports (http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2016/08/29/islamic-state-suicide-attack-yemen-kills-45-government-fighters/89527944/) . Dive Deeper: CSIS’s Anthony Cordesman authored a recent commentary, "U.S. Wars in Iraq, Syria, Libya and Yemen: What Are The Endstates? (https://www.csis.org/analysis/us-wars-iraq-syria-libya-and-yemen-what-are-endstates?block4) " ** In That Number ------------------------------------------------------------ ** 10,000th ------------------------------------------------------------ The 10,000th Syrian refugee will be resettled in the United States this week. Cordesman in “China’s Evolving Military Strategy and the Reorganization of the People’s Liberation Army (http://nationalinterest.org/blog/the-buzz/chinas-evolving-military-strategy-the-reorganization-the-17508) .” Source: National Interest. ** One to Watch ------------------------------------------------------------ (Photo Credit: Twitter.)
