THE EDITORS: “Does America still need affirmative action?” Yes, but
“the purpose of affirmative action is not, if it ever was, reparations
for wrongs done to a student’s ancestors. Nor is it intended primarily
for the benefit of the minority students who do, in fact, benefit. The
purpose of affirmative action programs is to provide and promote
diversity.” [Read more] And in Europe, THE EDITORS write, the ECB
must rise above national politics. “Germany doesn’t actually have a
veto; it just talks as though it does, and the rest of the council

EZRA KLEIN: “Romney, running for president as a fiscally tough
candidate who won’t duck hard issues but will also never, ever, ever
cut Medicare, has not followed Ryan and Obama's lead and imposed a
spending cap. So we have no real idea what spending path he’s outlined
for the program, much less how he would achieve it if his vague voucher
plan doesn’t realize the savings he claims, which it won’t." [Read

WILL WILKINSON: The trouble with Paul Ryan’s idolization of Ayn Rand is
“Rand was a staunch atheist, and Ryan is a conservative Roman
Catholic.” But it turns out that Ryan’s Catholic hero, Thomas Aquinas,
