Bass, Senior Fellow of the Yale Corporation</td></tr> <tr> <td>RE:</td> <td>Presidential Search</td></tr></tbody></table> <p>I am pleased to share with you further developments with regard to the Presidential Search. We have received over 800 letters from faculty, students, staff, and alumni in response to my letter of August 31. Many offered very helpful suggestions, and more than 200 faculty members have been nominated to serve as faculty representatives on the Presidential Search Committee. Involvement by the Yale Community is key in this process, and it is gratifying that so many individuals have responded to our call for input. We are in the process of responding to every communication.</p> <p>In accordance with the process we established, the Deans of the Professional Schools have reviewed the names of nominees from their faculties and given me their suggestions. Likewise, the current and former Divisional Directors of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences plus Deans Miller and Pollard, a group of fourteen in number, met and reviewed the names of nominees from the FAS and have given me a short list of recommendations. After further consultation with several Trustee members of the Search Committee, I have invited the following distinguished members of the faculty to serve on the Committee, each of whom has accepted:</p> <blockquote> <p><strong>Judith Chevalier </strong><strong>’89, </strong>William S. Beinecke Professor of Finance and Economics; School of Management; former Deputy Provost<strong></strong></p> <p><strong>Amy Hungerford, </strong>Professor of English and American Studies, Master of Morse College </p> <p><strong>Richard Lifton, </strong>Sterling Professor of Genetics and Professor of Medicine; Chair, Department of Genetics; Investigator, Howard Hughes Medical Institute; School of Medicine</p> <p><strong>Anna Pyle, </strong>William Edward Gilbert Professor of Molecular, Cellular & Developmental Biology; Investigator Howard Hughes Medical Institute; Professor of Chemistry; former Director of the Division of Biological Sciences </p></blockquote> <p>These four Faculty representatives will join eight Trustee members appointed last week. A roster of the full Presidential Search Committee follows at the end of this message.</p> <p>I am also pleased to announce that Charles Goodyear ‘80 has agreed to serve as Chair of the Search Committee. Chip, a Successor Fellow of the Corporation, has led complex organizations on several continents and I am confident will bring skilled and sensitive leadership to the Committee. </p> <p>To provide additional leadership from a highly respected and experienced academician, I have designated Paul Joskow ’70 M.Phil., ’72 Ph.D., to serve as Vice Chair of the Committee. Paul, also a Successor Fellow, is former Chair of the M.I.T. Economics Department and now President of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.</p> <p>I announced last week that we would continue the practice introduced in the 1992-93 Presidential Search of appointing a Faculty Counselor to the Search Committee, and at the same time announced appointees for Student, Staff and Alumni Counselors to the Committee. The Faculty Counselor will be available to any faculty member who wishes to offer counsel about the future of the University and share his or her recommendations of candidates. The views of any faculty member who so requests will be forwarded to the Search Committee by the Counselor without attribution.</p> <p>In the nomination process, the Deans and Divisional Directors have submitted to me a short list of nominations for Faculty Counselor. In addition, they have recommended that I appoint two Faculty Counselors from the FAS, one a faculty member from the sciences and one from the humanities, in order to ensure there is sufficient capacity and ample opportunity for faculty who wish to convey their views in this way. I found this an excellent suggestion and accordingly have invited the following two distinguished members of the faculty to serve as Faculty Counselors, each of whom has accepted:</p> <blockquote> <p><strong>Michael McBride</strong>, Richard M. Phil</strong><strong>., </strong>Chace Family Professor of English; former Chair, English Department </p></blockquote> <p>The Faculty Counselors, in addition to facilitating the flow of comment from the Faculty to the Committee, will be conferring with the Faculty representatives on the Committee and the Trustee Liaison to the Faculty from the Committee on means of developing better outreach to and communications with faculty toward the goal of engendering broad participation of the faculty as the search process progresses.</p> <p>The Counselors for Students, for Staff, and for Alumni will likewise be conferring with their respective Trustee Liaisons to design robust consultation opportunities for each constituency. For example, Alumni Counselor Michael Madison will be meeting with the AYA Board of Governors this weekend to begin their conversation. Student Counselor Brandon Levin has arranged office hours to meet with individual students and will be reaching out to YCC, Graduate Student Assembly, the Graduate and Professional Student Senate, and other student groups. Staff Counselor Janet Lindner will be communicating with staff shortly to outline a process for staff to be engaged in the consultations.</p> <p>On behalf of the Corporation, I want to thank all of those who have agreed to serve as members of and Counselors to the Presidential Search Committee. We are truly grateful to them for agreeing to commit what will surely be considerable time and effort to the benefit of Yale. </p> <p>In developing the structure of the search process, the Yale Corporation strongly affirmed a desire to have broad and vigorous participation from the entire Yale community, including a means for the major constituencies -- faculty, students, staff, and alumni -- to communicate and make significant input. I believe the structure now in place, which was carefully considered and crafted in the context of the precedents and traditions for Presidential Searches at Yale, will accomplish this goal.</p> <p>Edward P.
