On Saturday, April 17^th Michigan Democratic Party Convention delegates came
together to select Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton as their candidate
for Attorney General in 2010. We invite you join us for a conference call
with David on Thursday, April 29, 2010 at 11:30 AM Eastern to hear more
about David. We have included some biographical and background information
about the Michigan Candidate and a news article about the race to help
prepare you for the call.

_About David Leyton_
Currently in his second term as Genesee County Prosecutor, David Leyton has
been on the front lines fighting crime, standing up for victims, and social
justice under some of the toughest conditions in the country. During his
tenure as Prosecutor, Leyton has worked with local police to cut the murder
rate in half, started an Elder Abuse Taskforce to protect some of our most
vulnerable from predators, and partnered with the Flint Public Schools to
help keep kids in school through Project Chalkboard.
As a Flint Township official, David fought for the cleanup of a toxic
dumpsite and worked to ensure that the voting rights of people of color were
protected and respected.
Prior to public office, David represented working men and women in private
legal practice. He’s also proud to have been a past member of the AFL-CIO.
David and his wife, Therese, have been married for 29 years and have 4
children.

_David Leyton’s Priorities_
· Develop a Statewide Elder Abuse Task Force in cooperation with
County Prosecutors
· Aggressively use the power of the Attorney General to protect the
Great Lakes and the environment
· Make the prevention and prosecution of provider based Medicaid
fraud a priority
· Return the Consumer Protection Division to the stature it had
under Michigan’s longest serving Attorney General, Frank Kelley
· Maintain a strong focus on crime and public safety

_The Race_
Due to term limits, Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox cannot run for
reelection in 2010. Michigan’s Governor Jennifer Granholm and Secretary of
State Terri Lynn Land are also term limited. Cox is running in a heated 5
way race in the Republican primary for Governor.

State Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop and former Michigan Appeals Court
Judge Bill Schuette are running for the Republican nomination for Attorney
General. Bishop is in his second and final term as State Senator. During his
time as Majority Leader, Bishop oversaw two shutdowns of Michigan government
due to the inability to enact a budget on time as well as drastic cuts to
education. Schuette is career politician who served as Congressman, State
Senator, and Michigan Director of Agriculture before being elected to the
bench.

Jocelyn Benson and David Leyton were endorsed Saturday as the Michigan
Democratic Party's picks for secretary of state and attorney general.

The secretary of state vote was overwhelming for Benson, a 32-year-old
Detroit resident and Wayne State University law professor, who swamped
Detroit City Clerk Janice Winfrey by a 95%-5% margin.
But the race for attorney general was far closer. Leyton, 56, a Flint
Township resident and Genesee County prosecutor, beat Richard Bernstein, a
member of the Wayne State University Board of Governors, by a 52%-47%
margin.

"I'm putting the Republicans on notice right now that we're going to fight
for every vote," Leyton said.
Benson promised to fight for no-reason absentee voting and allowing people
to register to vote on Election Day. "It's just the beginning because the
general election starts tomorrow," she said. "I'll advocate for everyday
people."

The endorsements, won during a convention at Cobo Center in Detroit, aren't
a guarantee that the candidates will be the party's nominees on the November
ballot.

That decision will be made when Democratic delegates make it official at the
state convention in late August. But the victories give Benson and Leyton
the chance to put together campaign organizations and raise money with the
confidence that they will be the probable nominee. The Republicans also will
choose their nominees at a party convention in August.

Both Winfrey and Bernstein were gracious in defeat and said they'll step
aside.
"I'm a team player. I won't be a crybaby," Winfrey said.

And Bernstein appeared on stage with Leyton after the votes were tallied.
"Now that the race is over, I'm looking forward to going back to private
practice," Bernstein said.

Neither Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land nor Attorney General Mike Cox,
both Republicans, can run for re-election because of term limits. Cox is
running for governor, and Land is the running mate for gubernatorial
candidate Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard.
