Summit kicks off Tour to Revitalize the Heartland,
Releases New Century Foundation Papers

Heartland Director Tom croft helped kickoff the "Manufacturing a Better Paying Pennsylvania"
summit on Tuesday at the USW Headquarters in Pittsburgh as part of a tour of Heartland
cities.
Tom contributed to a blockbuster new report commissioned by The Century Foundation,

In the paper, Tom describes the need to mobilize new capital sources to spur advanced
manufacturing firms and revitalize industrial communities.

Conference kicks off initiative to revitalize manufacturing workforce

A conference in Pittsburgh urged policies and strategies that will boost the country's
workforce.
"Manufacturing a Better Paying Pennsylvania," held Tuesday at United Steelworkers
International's headquarters, drew union leaders, progressive think-tank analysts,
politicians and others to launch a national initiative to create high-paying manufacturing
jobs and transform the regional and national economy.
"We can do better, and this conference will kick off a sustained effort," said
Mark Zuckerman, president of The Century Foundation.
The "High Wage America Project" is a research and policy program led by The Century
Foundation's Bernard L. Schwartz Rediscovering Government Initiative. It will focus
on how to bring high wage work back to America's heartland, through revitalizing
manufacturing; positioning America as a global leader in technological innovation;
expanding apprenticeship, career, and technical education opportunities; and targeted
investments to create high-quality, high-paying jobs.
"We have an opening, an opening to talk about industrial policy again," said Tom
