In 1989, my Mom was diagnosed with breast cancer and was given five years to live. Then, in 2009, my sister was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy. Thankfully, we just celebrated my mom’s 85th birthday, and my sister’s in remission, too.

While she was undergoing treatment, my sister stayed on the women’s cancer floor in Minnesota’s Mayo Clinic. There was one day, after surgery, that I remember looking at faces of the patients in the ward and it hit me how indiscriminate cancer really is. There were women of all ages on the floor -- starting with young women in their 20's in their bathrobes walking the halls to women in their 70’s surrounded by grandchildren. There were women of all races, ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds.

The third Friday in October is always National Mammography Day celebrated as part of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It’s a day to remind women that the best defense in cancer, is early detection. Yet President Trump and his allies in Congress continue to take away funding and resources that make early detection possible for millions of women.

Cancer doesn’t care if you’re a billionaire or if you live paycheck to paycheck -- and your chance of survival should not depend on if you can afford treatment. My family is full of survivors -- but we were lucky. Both my mom and my sister had aggressive forms of cancer. I don’t like to think about what would have happened if they hadn’t been able to afford treatment or have the resources available for early detection.

They both received excellent care because our family was able to afford it, but they will have a pre-existing condition forever because of their cancers. Even though they beat it, the fight isn’t over. We’re always worrying about it coming back. And now, President Trump’s newest health care order has the potential to price millions of people with pre-existing conditions out of the individual insurance market and put millions more at risk through the sale of insurance plans that won't cover all basic services.
