Dear Robert,

I am not sure if you've seen the recent Republican Party mailers attacking Hala Ayala and Elizabeth Guzman, but they are trying to use fear-mongering to scare Virginia voters.

Their claim is ridiculous. They think giving drivers licenses to immigrants increases gun sales and crime. Well, there is absolutely no evidence supporting this. Period.

This is one of the most shameful viewpoints that has emerged out of the Republican Party this past year—their ungrounded, nasty, and hypocritical insistence that violent crime and immigrants are linked.

The irony is that these mailers are sent by Republicans that have made gun access easier than ever the last 10 years. These are legislators who oppose background checks for gun purchases even though it is a policy the vast majority of Americans support. Legislators who are huge recipients of NRA money. This sickens me.

Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, Pulse Night Club, and Las Vegas… when are they going to learn??

The fact is, immigrants commit crimes at lower levels than the general population, and the data is no different in the many states that already offer immigrants drivers licenses. If anything, it helps individuals, families, and communities raise their economic status and allows them to contribute back to the economy.

The more I see and hear about these attacks the angrier I get. Hala Ayala and Elizabeth Guzman are two of our finest candidates and they both understand that the key to lowering gun violence is commonsense gun reform.

Bashing minority candidates and trying to use immigrant communities as a scapegoat is not a real answer.
