FAYETTEVILLE ‹ UA had Georgia on mind

Much like last season, Arkansas was able to build toward its conference
opener against Georgia through the offseason and into camp.

The Razorbacks are determined to avoid opening SEC play 0-2 as they have
each of the past three seasons, and a victory at Georgia would be a spark
toward competing for the SEC West crown.

³We did some things in spring ball for it, and since we came to camp we¹ve
been preparing for it,² Coach Bobby Petrino said.

³We took a week in camp where it was Georgia week, where we actually went
through a regular week of preparation to play them, to get a little extra
work for it. Hopefully we¹ll go execute well and show it.²

Petrino said on his weekly radio show Wednesday night that ³we¹ve not been
really exposing a whole lot of our offense.²

Asked Thursday if the Razorbacks had been saving things on offense, Petrino
replied: ³We¹ll find out.

Hopefully we move the ball early and score in the first quarter. That¹s what
we¹ve got to make sure we do.²

Arkansas didn¹t have any problems getting out of the gate against Georgia
last season. The Hogs opened up a 21-10 lead after the first quarter, but
were outscored 42-20 after that in a 52-41 loss.

Personnel report

Georgia¹s All-SEC receiver A.J. Green is expected to have his appeal for
reinstatement heard today by an NCAA committee.

³Yeah, it¹ll be a little weird,² Arkansas Coach Bobby Petrino said in regard
to having Green¹s status decided on the eve of the game. ³You would think
they¹d do it at the beginning of the week.²

Georgia might be without cornerback and punt returner Branden Smith, who
missed practice Wednesday with what Coach Mark Richt called ³concussion-like
symptoms.²

The Bulldogs will likely be without fullback Shaun Chapas (ankle), who was
still in a walking boot Wednesday. Nose guard Justin Anderson (turf toe) is
doubtful.

Welcome to Athens

Arkansas Coach Bobby Petrino and fellow coaching veteran John L. Smith will
be making their first visits to Athens, Ga., on Saturday.

³There aren¹t too many stadiums I haven¹t been to, but this is one,² said
Smith, a 38-year coaching veteran.

Petrino coached at Auburn, a permanent opponent of Georgia, in 2002, but the
game that year was played in Auburn, where the Bulldogs won 24-21 to wrap up
their first SEC championship in 20 years.

Tailback talk

Bobby Petrino said Arkansas¹ tailback crew bounced back well this week with
Dennis Johnson still hospitalized.

³They¹re very motivated,² Petrino said. ³I thought they had their best
practice all year [Tuesday] night. The running backs were running extremely
hard, blocking, had a lot of enthusiasm and excitement. I was really happy
with the way they practiced.²

Petrino gave an indication of Johnson¹s importance to the team.

³He was always a guy I relied on ... that when things weren¹t going good, I
felt I could get him in the game and he¹d be a momentum changer,² Petrino
said.

³We¹re going to miss him a lot.² Reins off Murray?

Georgia¹s Mark Richt has talked about letting redshirt freshman quarterback
Aaron Murray take more shots because he¹s played with a fairly steady hand
through two starts.

³He hasn¹t put us in a bad situation with his play,² Georgia offensive
coordinator Mike Bobo said.

³Our whole goal going into this year was to reduce the penalties and not
give the game away by turnovers.

³Despite how the game went last week ... you¹ve still got a chance to tie
the game there at the end if we don¹t turn the ball over.²

Georgia lost 17-6 at South Carolina last week.

Flags flying

Arkansas¹ games have seen the most penalty yardage (241) by a wide margin
among SEC teams through two games.

The Razorbacks¹ opponents are the most penalized, with 19 infractions for
131 yards, and the Hogs are the second most penalized SEC team with 15
penalties for 110 yards. Only Vanderbilt, with 16 penalties for 143 yards,
has been penalized more.

Georgia, by contrast, is tied with Mississippi State as the least-penalized
team in the SEC with nine infractions for 55 yards.

Dogs data

With a loss to Arkansas on Saturday, Georgia would open with an 0-2 SEC
record for the first time since 1993, under Coach Ray Goff.

The 2000 and 2001 Georgia teams both opened conference play with a loss to
South Carolina, but rebounded to beat the Razorbacks - 38-7 at Fayetteville
in 2000 and 34-23 at Athens, Ga., the following year.

The 1993 Georgia team lost its first four conference games, including a
20-10 setback to Arkansas at Athens, which is the last time the Hogs won a
game in the series.

Twitter wit

Georgia Coach Mark Richt has a Twitter account, but he hasn¹t posted a tweet
since June.

An interesting fact about his account is he follows only three entities: The
Georgia Bulldogs, the NFL and Champ Bailey, the former Georgia star.

Arkansas Coach Bobby Petrino had a Twitter account established but has yet
to make a post, or import a photo onto his page.
