Biographical Information Ambassador James F. Jeffrey was nominated to be Ambassador of the United States to Iraq by President Obama in June 2010 and was confirmed by the Senate on August 5, 2010. He previously served as Ambassador of the United States to Turkey. Before his post in Turkey, Ambassador Jeffrey served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs at the U.S. Department of State. In collaboration with the Assistant Secretary for Near Eastern Affairs, he led the Bureau's Iran Policy Team and coordinated Bureau public diplomacy and internal management. Ambassador Jeffrey has held several overseas posts, including Senior Advisor to the Ambassador of the United States to Iraq from August 2005 to August 2006; Charge d'affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Iraq from March to June 2005; Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Iraq from June 2004 to March 2005; and Ambassador of the United States to Albania from 2002 to 2004. Earlier in his Foreign Service career, Ambassador Jeffrey was Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassies in Turkey and Kuwait. Other assignments have included Deputy Special Representative for Bosnian Implementation and overseas posts in Bulgaria, Germany and Tunisia. Prior to joining the Foreign Service, Ambassador Jeffrey served in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1976. Ambassador Jeffrey graduated from Northeastern University with a Bachelor of Arts in History and received a Master of Science in Business Administration from Boston University.
