Wednesday - March 30, 2011 From the School Community Connections Yesterday the Upper School participated in a day committed to having conversations about diversity. Pr.I.D.E. (Promoting, Inclusivity, Diversity, and Equity) Day was modeled after the Student Diversity Leadership Conference which is put on annually by the National Association of Independent Schools. Over the past couple of years, students who have attended the conference felt inspired to have students within our own community participate in the thought-proving and inspiring work. Those students collaborated with a total of 22 student facilitators to plan and implement a variety of workshops for both students and faculty. The theme of the day was Community Connections, and each student was assigned a family group named after metro stations throughout the metro area such as Anacostia and Bethesda. Our day began with a riveting presentation by Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, a Georgetown University Professor and a leading black intellectual and author. Dr. Dyson challenged both students and faculty to continue having the important conversations about diversity and identity that we were starting that day. He also wowed us with his many renditions of hip-hop and rap music, which he has studied extensively as a significant social factor. He also addressed issues such as affinity group work, the influence of the election of Barack Obama, and the tension between socioeconomics and access to resources and education. For the remainder of the day, students participated in activities aimed at exploring different racial, ethnic, and cultural identities. They were asked to grapple with difficult questions about how our school and the larger community address and meet the needs of every person. Students participated in affinity groups where they discussed commonalities and differences among them. The day ended with a Meeting for Sharing which allowed students and teachers to reflect on how they felt about the day and what, if anything, they learned. We hope that students will continue to have these important and challenging conversations with their friends and families.
