Thank you to everyone who participated in the auction. We had a great night for student financial aid. A special thanks to the chairs Mimi Reisner, Elissa Rubin, and Beth Wilkinson. Don't forget to pick-up items in the Auction office (located in the basement of the Zartman House) between 8-4 Monday-Friday.

The Academy Classes listed below have open spots. These are great events to socialize and meet other SFS families. If you are interested in any of them, please email events@sidwell.edu. The price for the Academy Classes is set. For the items below the Academy Classes that didn’t sell, we will take the best offer by Friday, April 22 at 12:00 pm.

#260 Back by Demand Wine Tasting
This will be an intimate gathering in the home of Sidwell Friends parents, Kristin Mannion and H.P. Goldfield. You’ll try several wines, learn where they’re from, why they taste as they do, and compare and contrast them with other wines throughout the evening. This event was a huge hit last year and sold out quickly. If you’re tempted, don’t hesitate for a moment. All wines included. Limited to 30 people. The tasting will take place in October 2011. At least six weeks notice will be given.

#261 Cooking Class with the Lower School Chef
The new Lower School Chef, Andre Spurgeon, will hold a cooking class in the Lower School cafeteria. The class will be held on Saturday May 14th from 10-12:30. He will teach how to make an easy and delicious three-course meal -- tossed salad, baked ziti and strawberry shortcake. This is for up to 10 people max.

Whether you don’t know the difference between a lager and an ale, or you want a chance to taste some special, small batch, craft beers, this evening is for you. Taste the difference between a Double IPA, like Sierra Nevada’s Hoptimum, and a Stout, like Rouge’s Shakespeare Oatmeal Stout. Experience the spectrum of flavors from a Belgium white wheat beer, like Hoegaarden, to the very special Morimoto Imperial Pilsner. Join Ivy and Horace Howells for dinner and an opportunity to sample the most remarkable beers craft brewers have to offer. The beer tasting will take place, January 25 with a snow day of February 1, 2012.

#263 Women’s Health Night
Join 3 of Washington's most sought after practitioners for an interactive and engaging night devoted to Women's Health. Hosted by Dr Robynne Chutkan, associate professor of Gastroenterology at Georgetown Hospital and the founder of the Digestive Center for Women in Chevy Chase. Dr Chutkan will discuss nutritional strategies for optimal health, anti-aging and weight loss. Dr Susan Miller is the founder of Voicetrainer, LLC, a voice and communication consulting firm and the author of "Be Heard the First Time: The Woman's Guide to Powerful Speaking". Dr Miller will reveal the secrets to enhancing voice quality, diction, projection and communication to ensure poised and effective presentations. Deborah Winter is a skin care specialist and the creator of the skin care line Albissa. Her integrative approach to achieving beautiful skin incorporates nutrition, lifestyle and environmental factors. Deborah will discuss non-surgical skin rejuvenation. Event will take place on Thursday, May 26 at 7pm. Light dinner and drinks will be served.

#264 Home Art Education
Join artist and painter Xilunnasi for a talk on home art education for our children. Xilunnasi has been painting since her childhood, inspired by her dad, himself a renowned painter in China. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Oil Painting at the China Central Academy of Fine Arts, and her Master of Fine Arts at Claremont Graduate University in California. She has taught Computer Graphics and Classic Life Drawing in both China and the USA. She has shown her works in the National Museum of Art of China, the United Nations headquarters, and museums and art galleries in Japan, Mexico and the USA. She is also a mother to a SFS second grader and has innovative and creative ideas for getting our children to develop a love and talent for the visual arts, from choosing art materials to how we as parents can help our children at home in art working. Join her in her home, where several of her paintings are on view, for a wonderful evening of conversation, wine and cheese. Limited to 30 people. April 29 from 7-9 pm.

#266 Dinner and Discussion with Wes Moore
Wes Moore, New York Times best-selling author of The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates, will enlighten you over dinner at the home of Stacey and Jarvis Stewart. Wes is a youth advocate, Army combat veteran, promising business leader and author. He was a White House Fellow from 2006–2007, served as a Special Assistant to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Following his time at the White House, Wes became an investment professional in New York at Citigroup, focusing on global technology and alternative investments. In 2009 he was selected as an Asia Society Fellow. Moore was named one of Ebony magazine’s “Top 30 Leaders Under 30” for 2007 and Crain’s New York Business’ “40 Under 40 Rising Stars” in 2009. Wes is passionate about supporting U.S. veterans and examining the roles education, mentoring and public service play in the lives of American youth. This will be an enlightening dinner with stimulating conversations, so sign up quickly.

#267 An Evening with the Lower School Librarian
Lower School librarian, Angela Smith, and Heidi Powell from Politics and Prose, will team together to give you a fabulous evening about Children’s Literature. Angela and Heidi will discuss “What is New in Children’s Literature,” a review of children’s “Classics” and “What the New Classics Are.” In addition, mother/daughter and father/son book clubs are becoming very popular and they will discuss good books to start your own book club. The discussion will take place over a light dinner at the home of Deborah and Hurly Doddy on April 28 from 7:30-9:30 p.m.

#269 Mind, Money, and Craft: A Selection of Renaissance Masterworks in the National Gallery of Art
For all of you art lovers or those of you that want to learn more—this is the item for you! You will join Al Acres, associate Professor in the Department of Art and Art History at Georgetown University, for a lecture/conversation on Renaissance Masterworks at the National Gallery of Art. The discussion will last approximately 1 hour and is for up to 12 people. Al has been teaching at Georgetown since 2006, having taught previously at Penn, the University of Oregon, and Princeton. He writes about Renaissance art and has spoken widely on his work in the U.S., Europe, and China. The discussion will take place on Sunday, May 1 at 3:00 pm.

#270 A Russian Musical Feast
Classic Russian cuisine will intersperse piano compositions from the Romantic period in this house concert performed by Anthony Weinstein and Karina Avanesian-Weinstein. The concert will feature a depiction of the historical and musical qualities of the pieces, fondly delivered by the performers, instructors of piano performance and music history at the University of Indiana at Bloomington. The Avanesian-Weinsteins are trained in the Russian school of music, first in the Soviet Union and then at Oberlin and Indiana University Conservatories. To be held on May 21, 2011 at the home of Mei Xu and David Wang.

#271 Tour de Friends
A FULLY SUPPORTED BIKE RIDE IN ROCK CREEK PARK SUNDAY, MAY 15, 2011 • 9:00 AM START Come join the second annual Tour de Friends and have fun riding a beautiful course through scenic Rock Creek Park. This is a fully supported Tour with two loops. The Family Loop consists of 14 mostly flat miles on winding roads which are blocked to vehicular traffic. The Challenge Loop is a rider-hosted 28 mile loop through some of Rock Creek’s finest nooks and crannies. The Leader of the Challenge Loop will encourage more experienced road cyclists to let it rip while also maintaining an even pace with the rest of the group. The start/finish is located near the Nature Center in Rock Creek Park. It will be a gathering place featuring food, drinks, music, and giveaways to all participants. The event features two loops, route maps, signage on the routes, food and drink at the start/finish as well as on the course, free parking, Swag, bicycle repair, first aid stations, support and gear on route, music and photography. Bring the whole family and have fun while supporting the scholarship fund! All children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

#272 Bobbi Brown Master Class
Education + makeup = fun! Learn Bobbi's signature tips and techniques in a hands-on session. Bobbi's professional makeup artists will teach and help you pick out your perfect colors. With their guidance and individual attention you will work at your own work station and apply your own makeup. All products will be available to purchase but there is no obligation to buy. Product samples are included! This class is for up to 16 people (12 people must sign-up to have the class) at the Bloomingdales in Chevy Chase. The class will be Saturday, April 30, 2011 from 9-11 am. Light snacks will be provided.

This is your chance to dine with DC’s most fascinating and popular journalists: Bob Woodward, David Gregory, Monica Langley, and Claire Shipman . They will regale you with stories and speak with first-hand knowledge about current topics. David Gregory has been moderator of NBC news’ Meet the Press since 2008. Monica Langley is the Washington, DC Deputy Bureau Chief for The Wall Street Journal and best-selling author of Tearing Down the Walls: How Sandy Weill Fought his Way to the Top of the Financial World. Claire Shipman is currently the Senior National Correspondent for Good Morning America. She joined ABC News in May 2001, and frequently contributes to other ABC News programs, such as World News Tonight and Nightline. Bob Woodward is an American investigative reporter and non-fiction author. He is best known for his original reporting on the Watergate Scandal. Woodward also finished his latest book, Obama’s Wars. The event will take place over dinner at the home of Beth and Ron Dozoretz on May 10.
