This month's JVhelpshomeless peoplefind hope andbuild new lives through new jobs. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Daily Lessons on Data Entry Christine Gosney,JV in Phoenix Sometimes, I get bogged down by the amount of paperwork that's required to keep a nonprofit or social service agency like Central Arizona Shelter Services afloat. The service reports, the job verification forms, the case notes, the emails, the phone calls On one hand, the data proves growth, or the need for more resources to keep things going. On the other hand, there's a client sitting outside my office who needs to see me to discuss job leads. Clients in our shelter have a lot of requirements to meet. After their intake, if there's room, they complete orientations for the shelter and campus. They meet with their case managers, who develop a plan with all their goals. If they're "job-ready," they sign up with Central Arizona Shelter Services' Employment Services. From that point, they attend a job readiness class, which is only available two days a week. Afterward, they meet with job developers to discuss applications, leads, resumes, skills, and barriers like felonies, drug or alcohol histories, or mental illnesses. They are attempting to juggle so much, all while living in a shelter. All of these requirements are in place for valuable reasons; clients can stay in the shelter for up to six months. No one wants to be here that long, though. As job developers, we encourage clients to take time to understand their situations but remain positive. We advise them to only go on job leads if they are prepared to get hired for that position. And, we help them with their homeworkresearch, resumes, applications, and personal appearance. It's a lot to do, but if they expect to obtain a job that will allow them to save up enough income to move out of the shelter, it's reasonable too. Our clientele is not the same as the average unemployed citizen grappling for a job during this recession. My most recent clients were a woman who became suicidal after losing her job, a woman once addicted to meth, a 50-something man with kitchen experience who keeps being turned away, and a man with a felony conviction who lost his job and home. Some of them say they will "be just fine" once they get a job and sometimes it's true; they never return to the office. Other times, the services they need, I can't provide. The most I can do in those instances is write a helpful note to inform their case manager. We have success stories. Our clients continue to find workas customer service representatives, general laborers, caregivers, bussers at restaurants, and more. Their skills are vast and the reasons for their homelessness diverse. There's a young man in his early twenties who found work at a grocery store and is saving money to move out. A married couple just hit the six-month maximum. He was able to find work after two months at the shelter, she is still looking, but they saved their money and can afford rent. Every success story had to overcome barriers to get an interview. Whenever I show clients how to email their resumes or provide guidance on telling an employer about a felony, it gives me fuel to get through service reports and data entry. A chance at a job can give someone back their dignity, independence, and motivation; it's a lesson I'm re-learning each day I'm here in Phoenix. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ JV Profiles Michael O'Sullivan, JV in South Dakota This month, we're introducing a new web feature toprofile Jesuit Volunteers and their experience with JVC.
