Dear Maisy,

We hope all is well. Please thoroughly read the below items regarding Teacher Recommendations and the optional College Application Workshops.

Letter of Recommendation from 2 teachers:

You need to ask for two teacher recommendation letters from core academic subjects (English, history, language, mathematics, and/or science). These are the core subjects that colleges list in the admission process.

The CCO strongly recommends that you ask 11th grade teachers as they have taught students most recently and (hopefully) at their strongest academically - but students may also ask a 9th grade teacher or a 10th grade teacher who they will most likely have again in the 12th grade.

You may also ask art and/or computer science teachers for letters of recommendation, but please know that these may or may not be acceptable recommendations depending on the institution. You should consult a college counselor with questions regarding an art and/or computer science recommendation.

As we mentioned in workshops this past semester - One recommendation must be asked for by the end of the junior year and the second must be asked for no later than the end of the first week of senior year.

As we mentioned in workshops, you should approach a teacher in person (not in front of the class or other students) and cordially ask if they would be willing to write a letter of recommendation. Once the student has a conversation with the teacher(s) and they agree to write on student’s behalf, student should fill out this Google form(once per teacher) within 24 hours of asking the teacher.

If you have registered for one of the two College Application Workshops...

Thank you for registering for one of the two the application workshops. We are very excited about this opportunity to work with you on a number of important elements of the college application process prior to the beginning of your senior year! If you have not signed up but wish to do so - please email Emily Thigpen directly at thigpene@sidwell.edu

Here are a few items about the three days that we want to share with you:

Each day’s session will be held from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and is meant to be a stress-free experience. You are among classmates, friends, and your college counselors.

All you need to bring is a notebook and pen.

Patrick Gallagher will lead a session about how to fill out the Common Application.

Students will have significant free time to work on the Common Application and any additional essays/supplements.

Each student will have their essay reviewed by a college admission officer and will have the opportunity to discuss feedback.

We understand that you may or may not have time to write a full essay, but please do your best once school ends to work on something – a draft, a few paragraphs, or even a few ideas – to discuss with an admission officer.

Essay topics can be found online on the Common Application website.

Each student will have a 30-minute mock interview with an admission officer.

On the first day of the program, we will have a session about best practices for interviews, so there is nothing you need to do to prepare in advance.

We will share with you the final schedule (including individual meeting times) on the first day of the program.

We will have snacks available throughout the session, but we will not be serving breakfast/lunch. You are welcome to bring a water bottle and snacks of your own choosing if you like.

If you have any additional questions/concerns, please let me know. We look forward to working with you throughout the workshop!

Good luck on exams.
