This month, Truman prepared for its annual conference, TruCon, that takes place from 01 to 03 June; supported members running for local, state, and federal office; and argued against the Trump Administration’s decision to withdraw from the Iran Deal. In addition, Truman Chapters in San Francisco and Washington, DC, held ceremonies on Memorial Day to commemorate those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Sherry Hakimi Sherry Hakimi is the Executive Director of genEquality, a nonprofit organization using behavioral insights and creative design to activate gender equality with and for everyone. She is an organizational design practitioner who has advised and worked with clients ranging from finance to media to technology. Previously, Hakimi led strategic planning for the NYC Workforce Development Division, worked in marketing and corporate communications at Reebok, and directed community organizing efforts for a number of Iranian American nonprofit organizations. Throughout her career, she has advised and worked with governments, universities, technology startups, consumer goods companies, financial institutions, political campaigns, and international nonprofit organizations. Hakimi firmly believes that Truman’s 4D approach to our national security is more relevant than ever, and places particular emphasis on diplomacy and development. She is active in the New York Chapter and has organized events for her Truman peers, including a private, off-the-record meeting with Foreign Minister Javad Zarif during the 2017 UNGA, where Truman members had the opportunity to speak with FM Zarif directly. She was a speaker at TruCon17, where she was one of four members who shared “Stories of Self.” Recently, Hakimi participated in the Truman South Bend trek, joining the Truman Chicago Chapter as well as other Trumans from around the country for a day with Mayor Pete Buttigieg. Building on a tradition that she started with a few other 2015 Fellows, this year she is also co-hosting an intersectional, interfaith dinner event during TruCon18: a Persian Shabbat Iftar. Raised between New England and Tehran, Hakimi is a dual-degree graduate of the University of Massachusetts Amherst and holds a Master in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School. 01-03 June 2018: TruCon18 in Washington, DC October 2018: Truman's Annual Awards Dinner Keynote Speakers at TruCon18 This month, Truman announced two of our keynote speakers for our annual conference, https://cl.s6.exct.net/?qs=709ab145cf1ba3ca84debd32f0afffe15f7cfbc57b4f7f0cbeb3f8c75a0d7f43bbce60ad9749fc64dfe824b7350d8a42 TruCon, which will be held from 01 to 03 June 2018 in Washington, DC. We are pleased to share that former EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy and Director of the International Security Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies Kathleen Hicks will be joining us to give remarks to the Truman community. Moreover, after considering the state of the broader national security and political spaces, we decided that TruCon18 will feature an all-female slate of speakers—not as a conference on women in national security and politics, but a conference demonstrating that a full program on issues in national security and politics can easily feature only the expertise and experience of women. Trumans in Primaries Over the last month, many Truman members running for local, state, and federal offices this fall faced their primary elections. In Indiana, Truman Partner and State Representative Dan Forestal is moving on to the general election. In Georgia, four Truman members—all incumbents in their respective positions—are moving forward to the general election: State Senator Tonya Anderson, State Representative Scott Holcomb, State Representative Brenda Lopez, and State Senator Elena Parent. On the federal level, Truman Partner Dan McCready is moving forward for a House seat in North Carolina, and Truman Defense Council members Gina Ortiz Jones and Joseph Kopser are moving forward in their quest for House seats in Texas. Over the next few months, Truman members also face primary elections in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, and Washington. In addition, Truman members published more than 20 op-eds in national and local outlets, including in Alabama, Colorado, Florida, Nevada, South Carolina, and Virginia, and Truman President and CEO Michael Breen https://cl.s6.exct.net/?qs=709ab145cf1ba3ca799dccccb875979436db0181dcf1a3833b242a7b1178157d4274ff830309ca475f350a9428fd763b published with The National Interest. Rose Drop Ceremonies in San Diego and DC At dawn on Memorial Day, Truman National Security Project’s San Diego Chapter hosted its fourth annual Rose Drop Ceremony at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, and the Washington, DC, Chapter held its first Rose Drop Ceremony at Alexandria National Cemetery. Collectively, more than 700 volunteered, and more than $44,000 was raised in order to purchase the 60,000 roses that were placed at headstones across the cemeteries in order to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. The volunteers included active duty military, veterans, military families, gold star families, elected officials from the federal, state, municipal, and special district levels, and local community members. The Truman San Diego Memorial Day Sunrise Rose Drop began in 2015 with 1,000 roses dropped and 20 participants. In 2016, there were 6,600 roses dropped and 140 volunteers. In 2017, 30,000 roses were dropped and more than 600 people volunteered. https://cl.s6.exct.net/?qs=709ab145cf1ba3cac546c57bdf5a1af4683e75d1490a2c7ce12c719e6422947c055a49e44b1b27edf8e29383ea389b6d Local https://cl.s6.exct.net/?qs=709ab145cf1ba3cab99fb100e04211981024e1f5835b67a41d964946dd49c6835646c29aa3f854afcbbab38f865cb6c9 news https://cl.s6.exct.net/?qs=709ab145cf1ba3cabe813724be6ed9be61e20c0bcd385314633f06d9f8c475e17d40c93b8309c1c8f0cec756b10c5299 provided https://cl.s6.exct.net/?qs=709ab145cf1ba3ca533ee1dd6ff718d580af03c4eefc79f058149ace81d70ddbd65b95acac2aea082bea4f02dc7085dd coverage for the San Diego ceremony. 05/03/18, Just Security, https://cl.s6.exct.net/?qs=709ab145cf1ba3cac13bf1f2df0b823937b77008150eff470597e2ea8a2d8567709a1057b7fe00e96096039fb18f5c7e Bibi’s Strange Iranfomerical Doesn’t Make The Case He Thinks It Does, by Nathan Kohlenberg, Truman Security Fellow Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu would like nothing better than to end the agreement by proving that Iran is violating it—but even after a raid into what he asserted to be Iran’s most secret archive, Israeli intelligence found nothing to allow Netanyahu to make such a claim. 05/07/2018, Truman Doctrine Blog, https://cl.s6.exct.net/?qs=709ab145cf1ba3cac14f103768a8d42434a1fb4a52b21c74970f73994210d7a16c8896dc40ba7def49080e4ef535855f More Offshore Drilling!
