The assembly this week will be the Middle School production of Aladdin. All Middle School students will attend the show at 9:30 on Friday morning. Public performances take place Friday evening at 7:30 and Saturday afternoon at 1:00 in the Arts Center. Everyone is welcome!
The 5/6 Talent Show will be held Friday afternoon in the Drama Studio at 1:15. Parents are welcome to attend, although space will be tight!
Eighth grade students will have the opportunity once again to attend the award ceremony for the Goldman Environmental Prize Wednesday evening. This annual event is a wonderful chance for our students to see the power of individual commitment to the welfare of our planet.
Next Monday there will be a special assembly with the 2011 Peace Speaker, Fozia Naseer from the Central Asia Institute (Greg Mortenson’s organization).
Next week is also the Middle School Book Fair.
As we head toward warmer weather, we are reminding students of the Sidwell Friends dress code. One new trend that I have noticed is the return of ripped jeans as a fashion statement. These are prohibited in the dress code, and we ask for your help in reminding students (both boys and girls) that these should not be worn to school.
Sidwell Friends Middle School has a strong commitment to eliminating the use of intolerant language and raising awareness about the impact of our words and actions. At school we work to show students how casual remarks can be hurtful, especially when they take part of another person’s identity and use it as a slur. We hope you will reinforce this message at home. This Friday (4/15) some students are choosing to participate in the Day of Silence to recognize the silencing effect of anti-LGBT bullying and harassment in our nation schools. Hanging in the Sidwell Friends Middle School lobby is the banner signed by Middle School students last year as part of the “Spread the Word to End the Word” campaign, presented in conjunction with Best Buddies Maryland. The story begins centuries ago, when the royalty of Agrabah spoke Spanish, and the citizens spoke only English. Communication is impossible without translation - which is controlled by the evil vizier Jafar. When Jazmin, the rebellious princess, and Aladdin, a delinquent street rat, meet in the marketplace, they find something special in one another and work to transcend the barriers between them. With a little magical help from the Genie, a better future is created for Jazmin, Aladdin, and for Agrabah.

SFS Middle School New Book Fair is Coming!
Mark your calendars and start thinking about all the latest titles you’ve wanted to acquire! The SFS Middle School Book Fair will be held in the MS Library, Monday, April 18, through Friday, April 22, 8:15 am to 4:00 pm. The books for sale this year are new (used book sale was last year), and all varieties and genres will be available. All proceeds benefit the MS Library Fund, and books may also be purchased for the MS Library. Paperbacks generally range from $7 -11 and Hard covers from $15 -20. This gathering s scheduled to occur right after drop-off and just before you head out to begin the rest of your day. We would like to invite you to please join other parents of 6th grade students in the Zartman House Drawing Room from 7:45am to 9:30am. This is one morning when you can forget about fixing that pot of coffee because light refreshments will be served. Better than any cup of coffee or tea, however, is the opportunity to touch base and connect with other parents. Questions or concerns about courses, sports, extracurricular activities, homework? Please join us for an informal evening of questions and discussion with parents of current SFS 9th graders. A diverse group of 9th grade parents have graciously volunteered to answer questions and provide information about their own experiences as their children made the transition to Upper School. Last year was the first year that parents provided this information (previously it was done by students) and the evening was a great success. Join us for the second annual US-MS Parent Information Exchange, in the MS Drama Studio.

It’s not too late to participate in the 2011 Events for Student Scholarships Auction! If you are unable to attend the auction but would like to bid on an item in the silent or live auction, be sure to fill out a sealed bid form (located in your catalog) and submit it to the Events office by Friday, April 15 at noon.
You can also support the auction by donating to Fund A Scholar. All donations are directed to the Student Financial Aid Fund. Donations can be made by mailing in a check or calling the Events office with a credit card at 202-537-8110. This is the greatest wildlife spectacle in North America with whales, sea otters, and sea lions, and also caribou, moose, grizzly bear, and even wolves. And all in a setting of glaciers, vast forests and tundra, and the highest peak in North America. Registration is first come, first serve.
