Tuesday - April 12, 2011 From the School This Week's Query How can we think of ourselves as equals when we are so different from each other?Notes from Sally The assembly this week will be the Middle School production of Aladdin. All Middle School students will attend the show at 9:30 on Friday morning. Public performances take place Friday evening at 7:30 and Saturday afternoon at 1:00 in the Arts Center. Everyone is welcome! The 5/6 Talent Show will be held Friday afternoon in the Drama Studio at 1:15. Parents are welcome to attend, although space will be tight! Eighth grade students will have the opportunity once again to attend the award ceremony for the Goldman Environmental Prize Wednesday evening. This annual event is a wonderful chance for our students to see the power of individual commitment to the welfare of our planet. Next Monday there will be a special assembly with the 2011 Peace Speaker, Fozia Naseer from the Central Asia Institute (Greg Mortenson’s organization). Next week is also the Middle School Book Fair. As we head toward warmer weather, we are reminding students of the Sidwell Friends dress code. One new trend that I have noticed is the return of ripped jeans as a fashion statement. These are prohibited in the dress code, and we ask for your help in reminding students (both boys and girls) that these should not be worn to school. Sidwell Friends Middle School has a strong commitment to eliminating the use of intolerant language and raising awareness about the impact of our words and actions. At school we work to show students how casual remarks can be hurtful, especially when they take part of another person’s identity and use it as a slur. We hope you will reinforce this message at home. This Friday (4/15) some students are choosing to participate in the Day of Silence to recognize the silencing effect of anti-LGBT bullying and harassment in our nation schools. Hanging in the Sidwell Friends Middle School lobby is the banner signed by Middle School students last year as part of the “Spread the Word to End the Word” campaign, presented in conjunction with Best Buddies Maryland. Click here to find out more about The Day of Silence (http://www.dayofsilence.org/) and click here to find out more about Spread the Word to End the Word (http://www.r-word.org/).Instrumental Music Notes 5/6 and 7/8 Orchestras and Handbell Choirs - No rehearsals this week (showtime for Aladdin!) Aladdin Pit Band - See schedules published separately Don't Miss the SFS Middle School Production of Disney's Aladdin Dual Language Edition! ALADDIN Poster.pdfBienvenidos a Agrabah, City of Enchantment! The Sidwell Friends Middle School presents Disney's Aladdin Dual Language Edition in the Mary Ellen Caplin Theater on Friday, April 15 at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, April 16 at 1 p.m. Admission is Free. The story begins centuries ago, when the royalty of Agrabah spoke Spanish, and the citizens spoke only English. Communication is impossible without translation - which is controlled by the evil vizier Jafar. When Jazmin, the rebellious princess, and Aladdin, a delinquent street rat, meet in the marketplace, they find something special in one another and work to transcend the barriers between them. With a little magical help from the Genie, a better future is created for Jazmin, Aladdin, and for Agrabah. General information is available at 202/537-8150. The attached flyer also has information on the show! Read More PA Announcements SFS Middle School New Book Fair is Coming! Colette Chichester and Felix Sanchez, MS At-Large RepsSFS 6th Grade Parent Coffee - Friday, April 22nd This gathering s scheduled to occur right after drop-off and just before you head out to begin the rest of your day. We would like to invite you to please join other parents of 6th grade students in the Zartman House Drawing Room from 7:45am to 9:30am. This is one morning when you can forget about fixing that pot of coffee because light refreshments will be served. Better than any cup of coffee or tea, however, is the opportunity to touch base and connect with other parents. We hope to see you there.Attention SFS 8th Grade Parents--Mark Your Calendars for April 27th, 7:30-9:30pm! Questions or concerns about courses, sports, extracurricular activities, homework? Please join us for an informal evening of questions and discussion with parents of current SFS 9th graders. A diverse group of 9th grade parents have graciously volunteered to answer questions and provide information about their own experiences as their children made the transition to Upper School. Last year was the first year that parents provided this information (previously it was done by students) and the evening was a great success. Join us for the second annual US-MS Parent Information Exchange, in the MS Drama Studio. Other News 2011 Live Auction Information! The Board of Trustees has been working for over a year in consultation with parents, faculty, alumni and students on developing a strategic plan that will define the education skill sets through year 2024, the expectations for Sidwell Friends faculty as master learners, how the School's Quakerness defines our values and priorities, and the business models that allow us to reach our goals. As this important works approaches its final stages, please come for an update and discussion on these vital and exciting issues. We look forward to seeing you there. RSVPs required to: Adrianne Isaacs at isaacsa@sidwell.edu. Thank you. Polly Bomstein and Lynn Sachs, All School PA Co-Presidents.ALASKA WILDLIFE ODYSSEY TRIP-A Wonderful Summer Opportunity for 13-16 year olds Join us for this one-of-a-kind, summer experience!
