Wednesday - April 6, 2011 From the School From the Upper School Upper School Collection today will be columnist, lawyer, and SFS parent Adam Liptak, who will speak on academic honesty and integrity. The Sidwell Friends School BSU Go-Go will take place this Saturday April 9 in the new Athletics Center from 8pm until 11pm. This GoGo is a successful decades-long annual tradition at our school celebrating this uniquely Washingtonian niche of music, and we also invite students from other area schools to come and enjoy. As with all other school sponsored dances, students are expected to be chemical free, non-violent, appropriately dressed and to conduct themselves according to our school standards. Unlike other dances, however, there will be two live bands, both from the local GoGo scene. Also unlike other dances, tickets and student identification are both required for entry ---our students have been given free tickets over the past 2 weeks, but if they lose them they will have to pay for new tickets at the door if any remain available. Finally, unlike other dances, we have made several security arrangements to handle the 600+ teenagers expected to attend (Sidwell and other prepaid ticket-holding guests), including a metal detector that all must pass through and several additional security personnel hired for this night. It should be a great party. Please note that all parking /pickup should be in our garage as 37th street will not be available. This Monday, April 11, is Faculty In-Service Day and there will be no classes. Tuesday, April 12, is Founder’s Day, and we have an exciting all-school program on the Wisconsin Avenue campus that celebrates our School community. Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to wear Sidwell colors!Community Service News The April edition of the Upper School Community Service Newsletter is now available on this SFS web page. This newsletter highlights upcoming and recent community service events taking place at the Upper School. D.C.’s Department of Health (DOH) recently completed a review of the immunization records of children enrolled in District public and private schools. DOH subsequently provided schools with the names of children who have incomplete or missing immunizations. A number of SFS students have been reported to our Health Services office. If your child has incomplete or missing immunizations, you will soon receive a notification letter from the SFS Health Office. This letter, provided by the D.C. Immunization Program, will list the immunizations that are due, overdue, or not in compliance with the Recommended Immunization Schedule established by the Centers for Disease Control. These notification letters should serve as a reminder to have your child properly immunized during the upcoming physician appointment required as part of the 2011-12 back-to-school physical assessment. Please note that the immunization regulations were revised in 2008 to include new immunization requirements. A copy of these new requirements is located on the SFS website under the Health and Emergency Forms link found under the Parent Portal. PA Announcements Strategic Plan Update May 2, 2011, 7-9 pm Please join Head of School Tom Farquhar, the All-School Parents Association and the Sidwell Friends Board of Trustees for an update on Sidwell Friends School’s Strategic Plan. The Board of Trustees has been working for over a year in consultation with parents, faculty, alumni and students on developing a strategic plan which will define the education skill sets through year 2024, the expectations for Sidwell Friends faculty as master learners, how the School's Quakerness defines our values and priorities, and the business models that allow us to reach our goals. As this important works approaches its final stages, please come for an update and discussion on these vital and exciting issues. Please RSVP to isaacsa@sidwell.edu. We look forward to seeing you there. Polly Bomstein and Lynn Sachs, All School PA Co-Presidents Other News Alaska Wildlife Odyssey Trip Join us for this one-of-a-kind, summer experience! In perfect gardening weather, SFS students, families and staff worked alongside representatives from Behrend Builders and Seedling Projects on a gardening project at EW Stokes Charter School located in North East DC. As part of their program From Farm to Desk, D.C. , Seedling Projects' is working with teachers and students at Stokes Charter School on a nutrition and gardening curriculum, and maintains a vegetable garden to teach healthy and sustainable food production. SFS volunteers helped to re-condition and re-locate raised beds, and got them ready for spring planting. Please check out the blog on www.seedlingsproject.org for photos and a write-up of this event. The response to this service project was overwhelming and we would like to thank everyone who expressed an interest in it. It was with regret that we were not able to accommodate everyone at this event. Benefit Concert for Rural Tibetan's High School Education A student run benefit concert to raise money to send a Tibetan girl to high school next year will be held at 7:00 on Friday, April 8 in the Mary Ellen Kaplan Theater in the Sidwell Arts Center. $10 Admission.
