Dear R., On Friday, Governor O'Malley appeared on NBC's Morning Joe and talked about the need to not only balance a budget but also invest in priorities that move us forward--Education, innovation and infrastructure projects that rebuild and revitalize our communities while at the same time creating jobs. And we wanted to make sure that you had a chance to see the clip because this is exactly what leadership looks like. CLIP of video. Now that the 2011 Legislative session is officially over, we also wanted to share with you more information on what happened over the past 90 days. By working together, we were able to: Cut spending by nearly $1 billion bringing the five year total to nearly $6.8 billion, reduced our state's structural budget gap by 42% and restricted general fund spending to a low %1.4, well below the 3.3% estimated growth. Pass InvestMaryland, a $100 million venture capital program that will create thousands of jobs and spur economic development Make our pension system more sustainable while preserving a defined benefit for our teachers and state employees. Maintain a record $5.8 billion for our public schools and protected important investments in higher education--including for our community colleges--that will allow them to hold tuition to a modest 3% increase. Provide record funding for the Chesapeake Bay Trust Fund Want to learn more? Take a look at our legislative accomplishments and budget explanation. You can also watch this short video from Governor O'Malley and read his oped in the Huffington Post about InvestMaryland. In this changing new economy, we're in a fight, literally for our economic future. There will be some states that win and some states that lose. But in Maryland, we have a Governor who is committed to continuing strategic investments in education and innovation, investments in infrastructure that rebuilds and restores our communities while at the same time creating and saving jobs and investments in our people, environment and quality of life. We can win that better future that we all seek. We just have to keep moving forward.
