The shows aim to offer solutions and products designed to cut costs, improve efficiency and conserve resources. Google chiefs switch roles Larry Page, the co-founder of Google, takes over as chief executive of the company in succession to Eric Schmidt, who becomes executive chairman. Sergey Brin, the other co-founder, will work on new products. Mining in Asia discussed Singapore stages the Asian Mining Congress, which over five days focuses in particular on exploration and investment. Qatar stages steel summit The Arab Steel Summit begins in Doha, Qatar (until April 6). The event includes an exhibition of iron and steel products. Chile hosts copper chiefs The World Copper Conference opens in Santiago, Chile (until April 6), considering world demand and supply, and mining finance strategies. Healthcare debated in US The three-day World Health Care Conference in Washington assembles more than 1,800 healthcare, government and corporate leaders to discuss the challenges of healthcare cost, quality and delivery. Post prices rise in UK UK postage stamps increase in price, with first and second class stamps for standard items rising 5p to 46p and 4p to 36p respectively. Franked mail rises 3p to 39p for standard first class and by 3p to 28p for second class. Tuesday APRIL 5 Corporate governance The European Commission launches in Brussels a public consultation on the effectiveness of EU corporate governance principles. It will focus on issues including the composition of boards, shareholder involvement, and enforcement of governance codes. Parliament’s Easter break The UK’s House of Commons is due to begin its Easter recess (until April 26). The House of Lords is scheduled to begin its break a day later but return on the same date. Canada under microscope Canada’s economy and the health of its financial and natural resources sectors are examined at the two-day Canada Forum in Toronto, attended by finance executives and government officials. Nuclear industry assessed The repercussions of Japan’s earthquake-damaged Fukushima Daiichi power plant are on the agenda of the World Nuclear Fuel Cycle conference in Chicago (until April 7). IOC meets in London The International Olympic Committee’s executive board holds a two-day meeting in London to discuss the forthcoming Games: London 2012, Sochi 2014, Rio de Janeiro 2016 and the Innsbruck 2012 Winter Youth Games. Wednesday APRIL 6 Clean energy reviewed Ministers from the world’s leading economies take part in the second Clean Energy Ministerial conference in Abu Dhabi (until April 7). They will review progress on 11 initiatives agreed to increase the use of sustainable energy resources. Corruption combated The Fraud and Corruption Summit opens in Copenhagen (until April 8), offering company and organisation executives advice in combating, investigating and dealing with such crimes. UK caps immigration The country’s new cap on immigration comes into force. It aims to cut net immigration to tens of thousands a year within four years from the present level of 226,000. Property tax increased Stamp duty on UK residential properties sold for more than £1m rises from 4 to 5 per cent. Trade unionists gather The 16th World Trade Union Congress opens in Athens (until April 9). Thursday APRIL 7 Monetary wrongs corrected Leading economists present their findings and responses to monetary and regulatory weaknesses exposed by the global financial crisis at a conference in Washington staged by the International Monetary Fund. Osborne on commerce George Osborne, UK chancellor of the exchequer, and business secretary Vince Cable are among the speakers at the British Chambers of Commerce annual conference in London. Investment directors meet The Association of Investment Companies holds its annual directors’ conference in London. Golf’s Masters tees off The US Masters tournament, the first of the sport’s four annual majors, begins at the Augusta National course in Georgia (until April 10). Friday APRIL 8 Trilateral body meets The Trilateral Commission, which aims to foster closer relations between the industrial regions of North America, Europe and Pacific-Asia, meets in Washington (until April 10). Saturday APRIL 9 Referendum in Iceland Iceland holds a second referendum on a proposal to repay the UK and the Netherlands €4bn lost when the Icesave bank collapsed. Grand National run The English Grand National steeplechase, one of the world’s toughest horse races, is run over its four-and-a-half-mile course at Aintree, Liverpool.
