In addition, I focused on the success of the DIGIT and SMART IOT Acts and encouraged the committee to continue to take a measured approach to regulating IoT. Also, just this week, we traveled to Brooklyn to co-host an event with the Brooklyn Chamber and Rep. Yvette D. Clarke (D-NY) focused on smart cities. A key takeaway, we heard, is to form strategic public private partnerships to help advance the city’s infrastructure using smart innovations. And we’re not done yet…the C_TEC team is currently en route to Sacramento for an exciting event tomorrow at the Kings’ Golden 1 Center, again focused on smart cities with discussions on 5G and autonomous vehicles. If you’re in the area, we look forward to seeing you there. I’m excited to introduce the newest member of the C_TEC team, Katie Nichols, who will serve as Administrative Assistant. Katie came to C_TEC this week from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute. Originally from California, she graduated from Loyola Marymount University last year with a BA in Political Science, and she is currently pursuing her Master’s in Legislative Affairs from George Washington University. On May 7th, the Telecommunications & E-Commerce Committee held its biweekly policy committee call and hosted Allan Zaremberg, President and CEO of the California Chamber of Commerce to discuss the California privacy ballot initiative (https://t.e2ma.net/click/j0wlmd/r2f0ql/3bbk2q) as well as discussed 5G issues and the net neutrality CRA vote. On May 8th, C_TEC hosted a new economy working group call. On May 10th, Julie Stitzel participated on a panel focused on retirement benefits in the gig economy at the Employee Benefits Research Institute’s policy forum. On May 11th, C_TEC hosted Jackie Keshian, staff of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, at the monthly UAS working group meeting On May 16th, Neil Bradley, Executive Vice President of the U.S. Chamber and C_TEC hosted Allan Zaremberg on a call to brief the entire Chamber on the California privacy ballot initiative. On May 18, the AV Working Group held a call discussing the Senate Commerce Committee’s outlook for the AV START Act and an upcoming C_TEC educational advertising campaign on AVs. On May 22nd,Tim Day testified (https://t.e2ma.net/click/j0wlmd/r2f0ql/j4bk2q) before the House Subcommittee on Digital Commerce and Consumer Protection on the Internet of Things. During the hearing, he praised the DIGIT and SMART IOT Acts as well as discussed how the Chamber is developing privacy principles. On May 23rd, the Telecommunications & E-Commerce Committee held its spring meeting. Brent Legg of Connected Nation, Richard Cullen of Connect Americans Now, Scott Bergmann of CTIA, and Rick Cimerman of NCTA participated on a panel about bridging the digital divide and spectrum. Jamie Susskind, Chief of Staff to FCC Commissioner Brenda Carr, and Melissa Froelich, Chief Counsel of House Energy & Commerce, briefed the members on a policymaker panel. Gail Slater, Special Assistant to the President for Technology, Telecommunications, and Cyber Policy, informed the members of the White House’s tech agenda during a fireside chat. On May 24th, Jordan Crenshaw spoke about the need to reduce regulatory barriers and the benefits of 5G technology on a panel at the Georgetown University Center for Business and Public Policy (https://t.e2ma.net/click/j0wlmd/r2f0ql/zwck2q). On May 25th, the AV Working Group held a call to discuss efforts at the Senate Commerce Committee to resolve stakeholder disputes over preemption regarding the AV START Act. On May 29th, C_TEC joined forces with the Brooklyn Chamber and Rep. Yvette D.
