Dear friends— Today's world can be a difficult place for children. When tragedies occur—like the recent mass shootings in Pittsburgh and Thousand Oaks—it can be hard for parents and caregivers to know how to explain the news. How much should parents share? What information can children safely handle? To help, Sesame Street in Communities has created new resources about coping with community violence. Age-by-age strategies break down children’s needs at different developmental stages, while child-facing videos and storybooks can help children understand and communicate their feelings. These resources are available at https://www2.sesame.org/e/293712/topics-community-violence-/2fydwt/310316878 We also know that in these challenging times, the most vulnerable children need a little extra support. That's why Sesame Workshop created materials to address the needs of children affected by family separation and other immigration-related issues. With help from key partners like Catholic Charities USA and UNICEF USA, we’re getting our bilingual resources to families and the providers serving them. (The materials include activity books and other tools to help children find comfort, plus support for providers who may have limited training in childhood trauma.) Where possible, we’re also helping on the ground; recently, a team of Sesame performers and employees visited centers sheltering children in the Rio Grande Valley to bring a few moments of joy. Whether children have been exposed to traumatic events in their own neighborhoods or across the world, caring adults can help them feel safer and more secure. Thank you for your interest and support as Sesame Workshop works to bring hope and healing to the children who need us most.
