Michael argues that even wealthier countries, which tend to avoid labels of 'diaspora engagement' are increasingly inclined to consider non-resident citizens and often have well established policies to do so. Empirical examples are drawn from a range of recent studies focusing on consular practices and voting rights. Sponsored by the Institute for the Study of International Migration. 12pm, ICC 302-P. Click here to RSVP (http://emigrationnations.eventbrite.com/?utm_source=Edmund+A.+Walsh+School+of+Foreign+Service&utm_campaign=77a2b6b323-Week_in_Preview_3_14_20133_14_2013&utm_medium=email) . ** Film Screening: Out of Cordoba ------------------------------------------------------------ Monday, March 18: Out of Cordoba is a documentary film, directed by Jacob Bender and produced by Mr. Bender and MLK Producciones of Malaga, Spain, that explores some of the most vexing questions of our time: Is there a “clash of civilizations” between the West and the Islamic world? Are Jews and Muslims eternal enemies, incapable of peaceful coexistence? Does religious faith lead inevitably to xenophobia and violence? Sponsored by the Alwaleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding and the Medieval Studies Program. 12:15pm, ICC 270. Click here to RSVP (http://events.georgetown.edu/events/index.cfm?Action=View&CalendarID=106&EventID=102500&utm_source=Edmund+A.+Walsh+School+of+Foreign+Service&utm_campaign=77a2b6b323-Week_in_Preview_3_14_20133_14_2013&utm_medium=email) . ** A Tribute to Jan Karski ------------------------------------------------------------ Monday, March 18: Featuring remarks by the Honorable Madeleine K. "On Grace" is a work in progress which seeks to define the concept of 'grace' from multiple perspectives. Collaborating with acclaimed cellist Joshua Roman, celebrated playwright and actress Anna Deavere Smith (Let Me Down Easy, Nurse Jackie, The West Wing) uses her unique technique for making theater to examine grace by performing a variety of people she has interviewed on the subject. Some interviewees include the late Reverend Peter Gomes, Imam Faisil Abdul Rauf, Chef Alice Waters and Rabbi David Wolpe. The performance will be followed by a discussion with former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. Sponsored by The Laboratory for Global Performance and Politics, a joint initiative of the Georgetown University Theater and Performance Studies Program and the School of Foreign Service. 7:30pm, Gaston Hall. Click here to RSVP (http://events.georgetown.edu/events/index.cfm?Action=View&CalendarID=251&EventID=102697&utm_source=Edmund+A.+Walsh+School+of+Foreign+Service&utm_campaign=77a2b6b323-Week_in_Preview_3_14_20133_14_2013&utm_medium=email) . ** SFS Internship Panel ------------------------------------------------------------ Monday, March 18: All underclassmen to come and learn about the many opportunities available to you while you are an undergraduate student at Georgetown. Marvine Howe shares not only the experiences of Iberia's Muslims but also the reactions of Spanish and Portuguese officials, academics, NGOs and ordinary citizens, who have found ways to incorporate Muslims and other immigrants into Iberian society despite domestic and European pressure to do otherwise. Sponsored by the Alwaleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding and the BMW Center for German and European Studies. 12:15pm, ICC 270. Click here to RSVP (http://events.georgetown.edu/events/index.cfm?Action=View&CalendarID=106&EventID=102498&utm_source=Edmund+A.+Walsh+School+of+Foreign+Service&utm_campaign=77a2b6b323-Week_in_Preview_3_14_20133_14_2013&utm_medium=email) . ** China-Latin America Relations: Challenges of Complementarity ------------------------------------------------------------ Wednesday, March 20: For more than a decade trade and investment relations between China and Latin America have flourished. China and many of its new Latin American partners, especially in resource-rich South America, have emphasized the complementary, win-win nature of the relationship. But the honeymoon period between China and Latin America appears to be coming to a close as some Latin American countries, such as Brazil, become increasingly worried about rising commodity dependency and as China faces rising anxiety over increasingly unstable relations with countries like Venezuela. This talk will explore the background and implications of this important and evolving set of political and economic relationships. Sponsored by the Asian Studies Program and the Center for Latin American Studies. 3pm, ICC 302-P. Click here to RSVP (http://events.georgetown.edu/events/index.cfm?Action=View&CalendarID=116&EventID=102936&utm_source=Edmund+A.+Walsh+School+of+Foreign+Service&utm_campaign=77a2b6b323-Week_in_Preview_3_14_20133_14_2013&utm_medium=email) . ** The Path to Ending Extreme Poverty: Don Steinberg, USAID ------------------------------------------------------------ Wednesday, March 20: Featuring USAID Deputy Administrator Don Steinberg and moderated by Mark Lagon. In his State of the Union address on February 12, President Obama said, "The United States will join with our allies to eradicate extreme poverty in the next two decades." To achieve this inspirational yet achievable goal, we must accelerate the pace of change in how we pursue sustainable development. At USAID, this translates into a new commitment to using our development assistance investment through partnerships; through the full integration of science/technology and innovation; through a 'whole of society' approach that draws on contributions of women, youth, people with disabilities, the LGBT community, indigenous populations and other marginalized groups; and through local empowerment, ownership and the democratization of democracy. Sponsored by the Mortara Center for International Studies, the Global Human Development Program and MSFS. 5pm, Mortara Building. Click here to RSVP (http://events.georgetown.edu/events/index.cfm?Action=View&CalendarID=242&EventID=102886&utm_source=Edmund+A.+Walsh+School+of+Foreign+Service&utm_campaign=77a2b6b323-Week_in_Preview_3_14_20133_14_2013&utm_medium=email) . ** CCAS Annual Symposium Keynote Address ------------------------------------------------------------ Wednesday, March 20: Is the modern Mediterranean one place, with a common history? Or several, riven by colonialism? Viewed from a global perspective, the Mediterranean region has enjoyed a common historical experience since 1500. Increasingly semi-peripheral with respect to the world capitalist system, and characterized by weak states, delayed or muffled class formation, agrarian backwardness and the persistence of pastoralism, the coming to modernity of the Mediterranean foreshadowed the historical experience of the Third World in its unity and diversity. The Center for Contemporary Arab Studies has been holding its annual symposium for nearly three decades, and this year’s meeting aims to take stock of the state of Mediterranean studies. An underlying aim for the conference is to commemorate the work of our late colleague, Faruk Tabak, author of The Waning of the Mediterranean, 1550-1870: A Geohistorical Approach. Sponsored by the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies. 7pm, The Fairfax at Embassy Row, Balcony Room. Click here to RSVP (http://events.georgetown.edu/events/index.cfm?Action=View&CalendarID=89&EventID=102372&utm_source=Edmund+A.+Walsh+School+of+Foreign+Service&utm_campaign=77a2b6b323-Week_in_Preview_3_14_20133_14_2013&utm_medium=email) . ** The Mediterranean Re-Imagined (CCAS Annual Symposium) ------------------------------------------------------------ Thursday, March 21: The 2013 CCAS Annual Symposium this year is "The Mediterranean Re-Imagined," a conference in memory of Faruk Tabak (1954 - 2008). Sponsored by the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies. 9am-5:30pm, Lohrfink Auditorium. Click here to RSVP (http://events.georgetown.edu/events/index.cfm?Action=View&CalendarID=89&EventID=102374&utm_source=Edmund+A.+Walsh+School+of+Foreign+Service&utm_campaign=77a2b6b323-Week_in_Preview_3_14_20133_14_2013&utm_medium=email) . ** Turning Us Inside Out: Economic Espionage and Distruption ------------------------------------------------------------ Thursday, March 21: Dr. Joel Brenner, former National Counterintelligence Executive and Inspector General of the National Security Agency, will discuss his appraisal of the new faces of war and espionage - virtual battles with dangerous implications for government, business, and all of us. In his view, the structure and culture of the Internet favor spies over governments and corporations, and hackers over privacy, and we’ve done little to alter that balance. Dr. Brenner will draw on his extraordinary background to offer ways to right this imbalance and bring to cyberspace the freedom, accountability, and security we expect elsewhere in our lives. Sponsored by the Center for Security Studies. 12pm, Mortara Building. Click here to RSVP (http://events.georgetown.edu/events/index.cfm?Action=View&CalendarID=384&EventID=102967&utm_source=Edmund+A.+Walsh+School+of+Foreign+Service&utm_campaign=77a2b6b323-Week_in_Preview_3_14_20133_14_2013&utm_medium=email) . ** Film Screening: 5 Broken Cameras ------------------------------------------------------------ Thursday, March 21: The first-ever Palestinian film to be nominated for best Documentary Feature by A.M.P.A.S®, the critically-acclaimed 5 Broken Cameras is a deeply personal, first-hand account of life and non-violent resistance in Bil’in, a West Bank village surrounded by Israeli settlements. Shot by Palestinian farmer Emad Burnat, who bought his first camera in 2005 to record the birth of his youngest son, Gibreel, the film was co-directed by Burnat and Guy Davidi, an Israeli filmmaker. Structured in chapters around the destruction of each one of Burnat’s cameras, the filmmakers’ collaboration follows one family’s evolution over five years of village upheaval. We witness Gibreel grow from a newborn baby into a young boy who observes the world unfolding around him with the astute powers of perception that only children possess. Burnat watches as olive trees are bulldozed, protests intensify and lives are lost in this cinematic diary. Sponsored by the Alwaleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding. 4pm, ICC 270. Click here to RSVP (http://events.georgetown.edu/events/index.cfm?Action=View&CalendarID=106&EventID=102885&utm_source=Edmund+A.+Walsh+School+of+Foreign+Service&utm_campaign=77a2b6b323-Week_in_Preview_3_14_20133_14_2013&utm_medium=email) . ** Gulammohammed Sheikh - Among Many Cultures and Times ------------------------------------------------------------ Thursday, March 21: Painter, poet, professor, critic, idealist and recipient of the Indian Government’s prestigious Padmashri award, by whose creativity the medieval—from Europe to Japan—meets the modern in all of its splendor and pain, Gulam Mohammed Sheikh (b. 1937) will be illustrating and reflecting on his life’s work and bringing his unique visual voice of reason and tolerance. Sheikh has been a major figure in the world of Indian art for more than five decades. This event is organized by Georgetown's Medieval Studies Program and co-sponsored by the Department of History, Department of Art & Art History and SFS. 4:30pm, McShain Lounge. In the wake of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, how is the United States military changing to meet the challenges of the 21st century? These and more questions will be answered by former National Security Adviser, General Jim Jones (F'66), former Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; General James Cartwright; and various other policymakers.
