Veteran Leadership on Display for the Inauguration:

On the eve of the Presidential Inauguration in Washington,ServiceNation partnered with The Artists and Athletes Alliance to host a "Celebration of Service" for those veterans and service members providing meaningful service beyond their time in uniform. Special guests at the reception included Vice President Joe Biden’s two sons, Beau and Hunter, and Hawai'i Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, one of the first female combat veterans elected to Congress. Both Congresswoman Gabbard and Attorney General Biden are commissioned officers in their state’s Army National Guard, and Hunter Biden is joining the Navy Reserve as a public affairs officer.

Got Your 6 partner Team Rubicon, also received special recognition at the reception. The organization's "Operation: Greased Lightning" mobilized hundreds of veterans to rapidly deploy to areas decimated by Hurricane Sandy. Team Rubicon deployed members this month to support tornado relief in Hattiesburg, MS, and will be conducting their 2013 NYC Fundraiser on March 5 with the hopes of raising $100,000 toward further reconstruction efforts after Hurricane Sandy.

For 70 Veterans, Their Continuing Mission
Starts in LA:

In January, The Mission Continues, Got Your 6 Leadership pillar partner, welcomed its 2013 Alpha Class to a three-day Fellowship Program Orientation in Los Angeles. The 70 veterans, who are beginning their new missions, come from 22 states, plus DC. They represent four branches of service. For the next six months, each Fellow will serve at the local nonprofit or community organization of their choice, addressing key educational, environmental, and social needs.

As part of the orientation, Fellows, staff, and volunteers deployed to The Dream Center in downtown L.A. for a large scale service project. They spent the afternoon painting, landscaping, and constructing an outdoor pavilion. Following the project, Fellows took the Fellowship Oath, a public declaration of continued service. This class is the first of four cohorts to embark upon the Fellowship Program this year. The Mission Continues will host Bravo Class Orientation this May in Brooklyn, New York.

Got Your 6 Helps Revlon "Highlight" Three Combat-veteran Sisters:

Earlier this month, Got Your 6 seized an opportunity to recognize three individuals who epitomize leadership in their community at the local and national level. Got Your 6 recently partnered with Revlon to celebrate the service of three sisters—all veteran combat pilots in the Armed Forces. The dedication and talents of Kelly, Amber, and Lacey Smith were highlighted in New York City, alongside actress and Revlon spokeswoman Olivia Wilde.

All three women received a hair-to-toe makeover and met with press to talk about, amongst other things, their experience as females in the military in combat roles. Kelly serves as an Air Force Officer, piloting the C-130 Hercules. Amber and Lacey both served as Chief Warrant Officers and helicopter pilots in the Army, flying the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior and the UH-60 Blackhawk, respectively. The Smith sisters share the unique distinction of having served overlapping tours in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom.

Got Your 6 is highlighting a leadership-focused Call to Action this month.

Be A Mentor.

"Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn." The words of Benjamin Franklin are as true now as they were over two centuries ago. Mentoring is one of the 24 “calls to action” featured on theGot Your 6 website. These are ways civilians share in the service that our veterans have committed to and help build stronger communities. By sharing your own experiences, you can help guide a child through the minefields of life you have already traversed while gaining a new perspective and learning some things yourself. You can take the lead and become a mentor through many organizations, like your local chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters, through Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts, Camp Fire, or through your local youth athletic organization.
