March 13, 2013 marked the begining of Pope Francis service as the
heir to St. Peter's chair.

Dear Friends,

March 13, 2013 was one of great joy in the Catholic faith! Our heartfelt congratulations extend to Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina, now affectionately known as Pope Francis. As we celebrate our new Holy Father, we must be drawn to his simple and humble life, and encouraged by his deep dedication to the poor and service. It is with great excitement to learn of the chosen name of Francis and why it gives wonderful hope to those we serve each day at Catholic Charities.

As you may be aware, the Pope chooses a name of a Saint they would most like to emulate. Cardinal Bergoglio chose to honor St. Francis of Assisi, a wealthy young man who chose to live in poverty. While fighting as a soldier, St. Francis had a vision that directed him back to Assisi, where he has lost his desire for his worldly life. On a pilgrimage to Rome he joined the poor in begging at St. Peter’s Basilica and the experience moved him to live his life in poverty. And it was the Gospel one day of how the disciples of Christ were to possess neither gold nor silver, nor other worldly possessions and announce the Kingdom of God that shortly after Mass moved Francis to throw away his worldly goods, his shoes, cloak, pilgrim staff, and empty wallet. He had found his new vocation, his new mission in life to care for those most vulnerable in society.

This is just the latest example of a pattern of humility and grace exhibited throughout a lifetime by Pope Francis. He is an inspiration to the quiet work of Catholic Charities, to serve all, to speak out for those who have no voice, and lead by example in simplicity and humility. To say that I am excited would be an understatement – I am thrilled. And, given the vast community from Central and South America here in our region, to have a Pope from Argentina speaks volumes to the importance of how far the Catholic faith has spread.

I feel very good about the election of Pope Francis, a simple man who cares for everyone and will bring great joy and gratification to the Catholic community through his Pastoral Care and love of Christ’s call to serve the least among us.
