Love is innate.

It's the emotional core that moves us forward and hope for a better America despite politics of gridlock gripping Washington, and despite the flood of 30-second attack ads designed to pit neighbor against neighbor here at home.

America is better than that kind of politics. We're capable of, as Gandhi said, overcoming power driven by fear and punishment with a more effective power based on love.

Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote: "The power of love, as the basis of a State, has never been tried." Well, I'd like to try. That's my commitment to you -- no matter how bad the attacks get in Washington, D.C., or during this election, I will focus on government based on love for our fellow Americans. It is the right thing to do.

I hope you agree.
