Paris-based brand Homecore started out making clothes inspired by hip-hop music. Nearly 20 years on, that style has been refined to a versatile and smart vision of city attire, such as the Homecore Fleece Jacket x Monocle. We spoke to Homecore founder Alexandre Guarneri to learn how to successfully mix things up a little.

Homecore has an interesting back story that started out in more casual streetwear. How did you get from there to the Homecore Fleece Jacket x Monocle piece?

Homecore started in 1994. We were hip-hop kids and wanted to show our sense of belonging to that culture. There was no clothing for it so we started making it ourselves. But the idea now is to dress with style but also be free from stereotypes and in harmony with oneself.

a very refined piece. Should streetwear be just as sophisticated as business or evening wear?

We took the fabric of a street guy's jacket – the fleece – and mixed it with the cut of a banker's jacket – the suit jacket. So the Homecore Fleece Jacket was born. This evolution looks back to the classics and adds interesting and meaningful details with a focus on quality fabrics and workmanship.

What kind of work goes into making one of the jackets?

We worked closely with the Monocle team to select a style that meets the requirements of a travelling gentlemen looking for a versatile, basic jacket that they can bring along on any trip. The Homecore Fleece Jacket x Monocle was made by skilled craftspeople in a small atelier in Portugal, the same one that we have been working with for more than 15 years. It's family-owned and surrounded by a beautiful vineyard and lemon orchard. For the jacket fabric we selected a cotton-nylon blend that is very durable, and you can wash and dry it easily. Special details contributed by Monocle such as the half-moon Corozo nut buttons add a unique flavour to the style.
