U.S. Global Leadership Coalition

Dear Hunter,

Before breaking for the fourth of July recess, the House
and Senate Appropriations Committees finished work on their
international
affairs bills. While both are nearly
identical in overall spending, I am very concerned the Senate bill
cuts base
funding by $2.7 billion, which could be a serious long-term problem if
it isn't
resolved later in the process.

Further action is unlikely before the August recess, so it's
a safe bet Congress will have to pass a continuing resolution before
the new
fiscal year begins October 1. Here is
our budget analysis for further details.

Just as the bills were being finalized, over 300 of our
state leaders from across the country flew into town to visit more
than 150 congressional
offices. With the unrest throughout the world as a backdrop, their
message about America's global leadership was very timely.

Finally, here
is an important bipartisan op-ed by former Senate Majority Leaders Tom
Daschle
and Bill Frist about the impact foreign assistance is having in
reducing
preventable childhood deaths around the world - real results that are
saving
lives with strong American global leadership. This is a story that all
Americans can be proud of, especially as we
begin our holiday celebration.
