Links: 12. mailto:Jenifer@democraticags.org _AG’s in the News: Politics, Policy and Your Attorneys General_ _Looking Ahead to 2012_ With the 2012 elections well underway this week’s column takes a look at one of the most coveted offices on the 2012 map: the open seat as attorney general of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Attorney General’s post, which became an elected position in 1980, has never been held by a Democrat. We strongly believe 2012 will be the year when that changes. Recently confirmed Attorney General Linda Kelly (R) has announced she will not seek a full term. She is finishing the unexpired term of Governor Tom Corbett (R). Current and likely Democratic candidates include former Congressman Patrick Murphy; former Lackawanna County District Attorney Kathleen Granahan Kane; and Philadelphia attorney Dan McCaffrey who is yet to formally announce. Former Philadelphia DA Lynne Abraham has talked publicly about running but she has not taken any concrete steps either organizationally or financially. Former Congressman Murphy raised over $500,000 in the first six weeks of campaigning and collected several important union endorsements. McCaffrey has the support of powerful Philadelphia Congressman Bob Brady (D). Kane will formally kick off her campaign this Thursday night with a celebration in her hometown of Scranton. Each of these candidates has different strengths and unique qualifications. Between now and the end of 2011 this race will be about money, endorsements and buzz. Once the new year hits this race will be about communicating a vision to Pennsylvania Democrats in the run up to the April primary. Who can protect Keystone consumers? Who can fight for the state’s environment and natural resources? Who can protect Pennsylvania children from online predators? No Republican has announced for the race, but_ _as of now Montgomery County DA Risa Ferman_,_ State Senator John Rafferty (R-Montgomery), and Cumberland County DA David Freed are the likely GOP contenders. No matter who the GOP nominates, Democrats like their chances to capture this office in a high turnout presidential year. With no gubernatorial election in 2012 the Democratic nominee for attorney general will run alongside President Obama and Senator Robert Casey (D).
