Dear Friends,

Exposure and experiences enrich art, enrich dance and enrich life.
Variety helps develop us so that we can fulfill our potential while
restriction and uniformity inhibit growth. Dancers are artists that
thrive on variety; however, the culture of the dance world often
encourages a myopic perspective that focuses solely on dance itself.
When an individual realizes that they have become a dancer, it has a
tendency to develop into an infatuation. A dancer derives so much of
their life's joy from dancing that it causes some to invest an
inordinate amount of time and energy into fulfilling the art's
demands. This devotion can push out other things, other
opportunities and limit or postpone traditional experiences.

As a former Principal with the New York City Ballet and someone who
works with dancers on a daily basis at the American Guild of Musical
Artists, I came to the realization myself and often see fellow
dancers realize that their self value is not required to be so
tightly linked to dance. Sometimes, something unexpected happens
that causes someone to widen their perspective and sometimes doing
something other than dancing, like working as a union delegate,
reveals neglected skills. They begin to see themselves as more than
just a dancer and in an image of a more well-rounded person.

Just last April at Career Transition for Dancers' Stepping Into Hope
and Change event, I saw repeatedly, the moment of realization on
people's faces who attended this excellent career development
conference. People who had defined themselves exclusively as a
"dancer" now saw that they had so much more within themselves

experiences and identifying skills and interests, the looks on
dancers' faces changed with the excitement of a revelation: exposure
and experiences enrich your life; but don't limit yourself because
dancing can be just a glorious part of the whole.

John's Moves

Story by John DeSerio, Graduate Student at Columbia University in
East Asian Studies, Career Transition For Dancers' dancer-client and
Caroline H. Newhouse and Sono Osato scholarship recipient

John's Words: I haven't written in a while so I wanted to give you a
little update on my year in Lhasa, Tibet. My classes have been
challenging but are going well and I continue to take courses in
Tibetan literature, religious traditions and local Lhasa dialect.
Although classes take up most of my day and energy I have also been
working on some individual projects that look at current trends in
commercial development, educational opportunities and popular
culture. On Friday and Saturday evenings, I am still volunteering as
an English teacher and tutor for local students. And starting three
weeks ago, I began visiting an orphanage for children who have either
lost their parents or their parents are unable to support them. The
orphanage has been such an amazing experience for me, one where I
feel I can make a real difference in the daily lives of local
children. We sing, we dance, we play soccer and basketball, and all
while speaking English and Tibetan. I feel these relationships have
already made a difference in my life.

Additionally, I happily have two wonderful language partners: a
cellist and a young aspiring artist (painter and singer). We meet two
to three times a week and converse in English and Tibetan about our
lives and dreams while living here in Lhasa. Recently, I participated
in the Tibet University school-wide Track and Field Competition
representing my school, The Foreign Students Department. Although I
lost terribly in the 100 meter dash, and 4 x 100 meter relay, I ended
up placing 4th in the javelin competition. What an amazing
experience; it goes to show you can't count those old baseball
player/dancer/crew guys out of any athletic competition.

As I have a month and a half left of the program I look to increase
my studies and involvement in the community. I just offered to help a
medical student translate a book of Tibetan Traditional Medicine into
English from Chinese. This looks like the beginning of my Chinese
language studies which I am very much excited about. Continuing my
education was a necessity and one of the best decisions I've ever
made. It has provided me with unique experiences of a lifetime. I
am ever grateful for the additional support through the Caroline H.
Newhouse scholarship program.
