AG Biden to name independent prosecutor in probe of illegal campaign practices in Delaware

Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden announced today that he will recuse himself from the investigation of illegal campaign practices in Delaware.

The U.S. Attorney’s office uncovered the alleged crimes while investigating illegal campaign contributions that link the 2008 presidential campaign of the attorney general’s father, Vice President Joe Biden, to a scheme led by liquor executive Christopher Tigani.

On Thursday, Tigani pleaded guilty to felony violations of campaign finance law. Some of the illegal contributions were made to Vice President Biden.

Biden said he will appoint an independent counsel to handle the investigation of information being sent to the Delaware Department of Justice by the federal officials.

Spokesman Jason Miller said the special counsel would come from outside the Department of Justice and will be announced soon.
