O’Malley to appear with Biden, others at White House event

Martin O’Malley (D) is slated to join Vice President Biden at a news conference in Washington on Thursday to talk about national plans for a project that O’Malley has made a priority at home: strengthening the ability of first-responders and law enforcement officers to communicate, particularly in times of crises.

Biden (D) will deliver remarks at the event on the “effort to develop and deploy a nationwide, interoperable public safety broadband network” and release a report on the subject, according to his office.

Besides O’Malley, others scheduled to participate in the event include Attorney General Eric Holder, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski, Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism John Brennan and New York City Police Department Commissioner Ray Kelly.

In Maryland, the O’Malley administration is building what it bills as a “state-of-the-art, 700 MHz interoperable radio system” that will be accessible to every public safety officer across the state.

To date, Maryland has “regional interim radio interoperability solutions” in all but three Maryland counties, which should be online by the end of the year, according to O’Malley spokeswoman Takirra Winfield.

“President Obama’s vision for a Nationwide Public Safety Broadband Network aligns with the administration’s goals to bring public safety technology into the 21st century by connecting first responders in times of crisis,” Winfield said.
