Good news for my dad- he doesn't need surgery at this time, which was his best case scenario. He did not rupture the herniated disc, but he did pinch the nerve which caused the severe pain (it was a tough thing to watch my dad go through- we had to get all of the grandkids out of the house so they wouldn't hear it). He will have to stay at the hospital for another couple of nights as they get the inflammation down around the nerve. Then he will be basically on bed rest for 14 days. They will start a series of epidural shots, which should incrementally improve his condition. The hope is that through the shots he will be able to heal his way out of this without the need of surgery to remove the disc. The neuro surgeon he saw today was great. He was far better then the orthopaedic surgeon he saw upon arrival to the hospital- that guy wanted to operate on my dad immediately, saying that was my dad's only option. Dad's in great spirits, and is relieved. My mom is reading him the riot act, making sure that he follows all of the instructions this doctor gives him. My dad loves to work, and can't stand still. I think the episode he went through sunday morning scared him straight though. ----- Original Message ----- From: Hunter Biden <hbiden@rosemontseneca.com> To: Person, Fran Sent: Mon Jun 20 19:28:56 2011 Subject: Re: Re: Re: Re: How is Dad? Tomorrow as the neurosurgeon assesses my dad, if he refers him to a specialist, Doc can help me navigate that process...making sure he's in good hands and that he's not getting the run around. It should be pretty straightforward though. > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Hunter Biden <hbiden@rosemontseneca.com> > To: Person, Fran > Sent: Sun Jun 19 23:36:47 2011 > Subject: Re: Re: Re: > > Anything I can do- did you talk to JRB? > > R. My dad might need emergency surgery on his back. My aunt worked for a good neurosurgeon in paoli that I think he might use but I wanted to make sure he has the best.
