John Bryson's nomination shows and important evolution in Obama's Leadership

Earlier this week, President Obama nominated John Bryson-a former environmental
lawyer turned energy executive-to be his new Secretary of Commerce. This nomination
is a stark contrast to his previous picks for the post, and shows an evolution in
the President's thinking about what type of leaders he wants to guide his administration.
With Bryson, the President chose substantive business leadership over political
experience, which will make him an important under-represented voice in the Cabinet.

During the presidential transition in 2008, much was made over Obama's study of
Abraham Lincoln's cabinet, dubbed by historian Doris Kearns Goodwin as "the team
of rivals." Senator Hillary Clinton was appointed as Secretary of State after
a fierce primary battle, Bush-appointee Defense Secretary Robert Gates was asked
to continue his service at the pentagon, and the important position of Commerce
Secretary was first given to primary-rival Governor Bill Richardson, and then Republican
Senator Judd Gregg before finally landing with former Governor Gary Locke.

One important point largely overlooked in this discussion was the fact that his
cabinet, while reflecting many important areas of diversity, heavily favored politicos
at the expense of business leaders and practitioners...

A New Era for the IMF: Could maintaining the status quo also produce change?

Now that Dominique Strauss-Kahn is ensconced in the New York legal process, having
resigned from his position as Managing Director of the IMF, the conversation has
shifted sharply to the debate over who should succeed him. Christine Lagarde, the
French Finance Minister, would seem to be the front-runner, having declared her
candidacy and currently enjoying the backing of the European countries. Lagarde
has spent much of her career in both U.S. and European circles, and possesses the
politicking skills necessary to garner the support from the most traditionally powerful
governments in the IMF.

Agustín Carstens, the current Governor of Mexico's Central Bank, is the leading
candidate so far among the "developing countries," which see Strauss-Kahn's resignation
as an opportunity to have a stronger voice within the global community. Carstens,
Mexico's former Finance Minister, is also the former Deputy Managing Director of
IMF and holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Chicago. A constant presence
in the U.S. while he was Finance Minister, he is also seen as a leader who can make
a strong claim about understanding the traditional positions of the U.S. and Europe
while maintaining his credibility among developing countries.

But there are challenges to appointing someone from a developing country as the
head of the IMF...

A Happy Ending for Honduras?

Former Honduran President Manuel Zelaya went home on May 28th, returning triumphant
to his country where he was welcomed by thousands of followers after nearly two
years of exile.

On June 28, 2009 following orders of the Supreme Court, the military took President
Zelaya from the Presidential palace in his pajamas and put him on a plane to Costa
Rica. The main reason for Zelaya's ouster was that he failed to comply with a Supreme
Court ruling that prohibited him from holding a referendum that would call for a
Constitutional Assembly, opening the door for presidential reelection - which is
strictly prohibited in Honduran law.

Following Zelaya's ouster, Honduras was expelled from the Organization of American
States (OAS), as all governments in the hemisphere, including the United States,
condemned the incident as a coup d'etat.

However, five months after the incident, when Zelaya's term would have ended, the
interim government held elections where Porfirio Lobo was elected President. Although
some countries, like the United States, recognized the Honduran government following
Lobo's election, others including Brazil, Venezuela and Nicaragua continued to refuse
recognition and demanded that Zelaya be allowed to return to the country without
being prosecuted (at the time there were several charges pending against him)...

First Annual Meeting of Center for Global Dialogue and Cooperation Offers Important
Discussion for Leaders in Academia, Business and Government

Meeting with Western Balkan Leaders on Regional Stability and Good Governance as
Prerequisites for Economic Development with Keynote Address by former President
Clinton

The Center for Global Dialogue and Cooperation - CGDC launched its first annual
meeting and brought together political leaders, business executives, and leading
academics from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia,
Slovenia, Serbia, and the United States to discuss regional stability, good governance
and economic development of the Western Balkans.

The dialogue and cooperation for change was focused on the core topics of "Good
Governance as a Prerequisite for Sustainable Economic Development" and "Regional
Stability, Democracy, and Economic Opportunity," and the discussions cover the
most pertinent issues in the regions including the encouragement of the dialogue
between Kosovo and Serbia; encouragement of the dialogue between the three states
of Bosnia and Herzegovina; the importance of good governance, and the importance
of attracting direct foreign investments to these countries...
