Biographical Information Sheikh Mohammed bin Essa Al Khalifa is Chief Executive of the Bahrain Economic Development Board, the public agency responsible for formulating and overseeing the economic development strategy of The Kingdom of Bahrain. He was appointed to this role in June 2005, after ten years as a trusted aide to His Royal Highness Sheikh Salman bin Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Bahrain. Sheikh Mohammed has played a key leadership role in the Economic Development Board's strategic initiatives, including: de-regulating the Kingdom's telecom sector; launching a labor market reform program to allow Bahrainis and expatriates to compete equally; establishing Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company to own and manage governmental assets, with the aim of professionalizing management, increasing return on equity of the government's portfolio, and improving transparency and good governance; developing a master plan for determining land use and zoning for the next twenty years; education and training reform; and leading the Bahrain Development Bank's reform program to improve its provision of capital and financing for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Sheikh Mohammed is involved in the wider economic development of the region, notably through the World Economic Forum and regional forums. He is Chairman of the Bahrain Chapter of Young Arab Leaders, the Bahrain Development Bank, Bahrain Polytechnic, and Capital Club Bahrain. He is Vice Chairman of Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company. He is also a Board Member of the Bahrain Association of Banks, the Bahrain Labour Market Regulatory Authority, and The Crown Prince's International Scholarship Program. Sheikh Mohammed earned a Bachelor's degree in Economic Theory from the American University in Washington, D.C. and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Business Studies from the London School of Economics.
