Democrat Gretchen Whitmer won the Democratic nomination for governor of Michigan, turning back a primary challenge from progressive outsider candidate Abdul El-Sayed.

Whitmer had 50 percent of the primary vote when the Associated Press called the race with 27 percent of precincts reporting. El-Sayed, a physician who supported single-payer health care and was backed by Sen. Bernie Sanders, had 35 percent of the vote, while businessman Shri Thanedar had 15 percent.

Whitmer, a former member of the state Senate, had started the primary as the frontrunner and won endorsements from EMILY's List, key labor groups and officials like Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan. But El-Sayed challenged her as an insider whose vision for the state was not bold enough. Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez rallied for El-Sayed in the final days of the primary.
