UN debates Cyprus, Libya
The United Nations Security Council is expected to renew its peacekeeping force mandate for Cyprus amid talks to reunify the Mediterranean island. On Wednesday, the council will also hold talks in New York on Libya, with a focus on “end-game” strategies to avoid a protracted conflict.

Obama talks job creation
Barack Obama,
US president, meets the President’s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness in North Carolina to discuss policies to foster growth, accelerate job creation, and bolster US competitiveness.

Trichet lecture on crisis
Jean-Claude Trichet, president of the European Central Bank, gives a lecture on the economic crisis, centred on the euro and central bank economic governance at the LSE in London.

Global Health awards
The Global Health Council holds a conference in Washington, including presentation of the Gates Award for Global Health, for an organisation making a lasting contribution
to the well-being of the poor (until June 17).

Panorama probes banks
The BBC screens a Panorama investigation into whether staff in Britain’s high street banks have learnt the lessons from penalties imposed for mis-selling insurance and risky investment products.

EU commodities conference
Nicolas Sarkozy, French president, and José Manuel Barroso, European Commission president, open a European Commission conference in Brussels on commodities and raw materials, with the focus on price volatility, supply security and policy responses.

Saudi
women stage protest
Saudi Arabian women stage a mass drive against the ban on women motorists after activist Manal al-Sharif, 32, was detained last month after posting a video of herself behind the wheel on YouTube. More protests are planned for Friday.

Lords vote on EU bill
Lords hold a report-stage vote on UK government’s European Union bill, which requires a referendum before any transfer of power and clarifies that EU law has effect in UK only through an act of parliament.

Offshore oil and gas event
The Brazil Offshore oil and gas trade show and conference opens
in Macaé, Brazil (until June 17).

Hats on for Royal Ascot
The Royal Ascot racing festival gets under way for five days in the UK, with ladies’ day marking the event’s traditional parade of hats on Thursday.

Asia retail industry expo
Chain-stores, brand owners and advertising agencies gather for the Retail Asia Expo on products and services for the industry in Hong Kong (until June 16).

Bank stress test results
The European Banking Authority is expected to publish the results of its second EU-wide bank stress test today or around the middle of June, assessing the sector’s ability to absorb future shocks.

Chromebook goes on sale
Google launches a laptop powered by its Chrome operating system. The computers, made by Samsung and Acer and initially on sale in the US, UK, France, Germany, Netherlands, Spain and Italy, run all their services through the internet.

Dublin literary award
The winner of the €100,000 Impac Dublin literary award, the highest value award for a single work, is announced with an international shortlist that includes Colm Toibin, William Trevor, Barbara Kingsolver and Yiyun Li.

Systemic risk reforms
The Interim Financial Policy Committee meets for the first time at the Bank of England to tackle systemic risks to the UK finance system. The committee, created by the coalition government, includes Bank governor Mervyn King and Lord Turner, Financial Services Authority chairman.

Jintao in St Petersburg
Hu Jintao, the Chinese premier, José Luis Zapatero, the Spanish prime minister, and Dmitry Medvedev, Russian president, are due to attend the St Petersburg International Economic Forum which takes place over three days.

BlackBerry picking
The BlackBerry PlayBook tablet computer goes on sale in the UK in competition with Apple’s iPad. The PlayBook went on sale in the US in April.

Sustainable finance awards
The FT Sustainable Finance Conference and awards take place in London with speakers including Andrew Mitchell, UK minister for international development.

Golan Heights on agenda
The UN Security Council discusses peacekeeping forces in the Golan Heights – the region disputed between Israel and Syria – where 23 protesters were reportedly killed earlier this month by Israeli forces. The council will also consider a new mandate for sanctions on Iran’s nuclear programme.

On the grapevine
The Vinexpo hosts trade professionals from wine and spirits-producing regions across the world in Bordeaux (until June 23).
