Tuesday - June 7, 2011 From the School This Week's Query What did you learn about yourself this year, and how can you keep that in mind as you look forward to next year? Notes from Sally The Middle School closing assembly will be held at 2:15 on Thursday afternoon and will last until regular dismissal time. Thursday is the last day of school, and it is a full day. The shuttle will run to the Lower School, and there is aftercare. Traffic on 37th Street was a mess on Friday afternoon, and a police officer stopped by to complain. He has let me know that he will give tickets to any drivers who are waiting on 37th Street in the afternoon. Unless you know that your child will be ready right at dismissal time, you should plan to come later so that your child is ready to hop in the car when you pull up. A reminder that the parents will be providing ice cream to all Middle School students on Wednesday after school, and the closing assembly is Thursday at the end of the day, so kids may be slow coming out both of those days. With Upper School in exams, the garage is also a good option for these last few days; just be sure that the kids know where to meet their cars. As noted in a newsflash last week, do hang on to your white plastic vehicle security cards for next year. Final reports for the year will be posted on line during the week of June 20th. Families who have not completed their emergency information or their household and student information or who have financial holds or missing library books will not have reports posted. Please be sure these items are taken care of. Homeroom and team placement information for rising 5th, 6th, and 7th graders will be sent in early July. We will also post a list of supplies that students will need for next year on the website by mid-July. Final class placement information for 8th graders going on to the Upper School will be part of the comment in the final report card for math, science, and language. Many many thanks to all of our parent volunteers! First of all, thanks to Belinda Nixon and Gita van Heerden for leading the Middle School Parents Association so capably this year! They were ably supported by a great roster of grade reps and room/team parents. We would also like to thank Liz Bronder for her work on the 7/8 dance committee (two years of great events!), Sherri Cafritz for her work on Community Service, the patient Tuesday Letter team, and all of the parent volunteers who worked in the office, in the library, and on all the many tasks that support us. A big thank you too to all of you who have brought in snacks for our faculty meetings! If you are missing a dish, please do come by and we can help you find it. Carlene is wrapping up her duties this week. If you are interested in being a parent volunteer in the office next year and you have not already spoken to her, please email Jennifer Mitchell or me during the summer and include your preferred day and time (morning or afternoon.) For parents of our Aladdin cast who may be having trouble seeing the photos from the production, click here . Some final congratulations are in order for student accomplishments this spring! Every year, all of our 6th, 7th and 8th graders participate in the Maryland Math League Contest. The contest consists of 35 challenging questions, to be completed in 30 minutes. Congratulations to 6th graders Lucy Norton, Amal Mattoo, and Luke Oh, 7th graders Sammy Singer, David Hauge, and Jacob Walker, and 8th graders Claire Thompson, Naomi Weiner, Riley Davies, Yasmin Siahpoosh, and Gigi Stark, all of whom scored in the top 20 (out of thousands of middle schoolers in Maryland and DC who took the contest) for their grade level. Our 6th grade top scorers placed 4th as a team, our 7th grade top scorers placed 3rd as a team, and our 8th grade top scorers placed 2nd as a team. 7th grader Sammy Singer placed 2nd among all 7th graders who took the contest in Maryland and DC. And our writers are also high achievers! Clara Molot won the Stenhouse Publishing Adventure Writing Contest, and Jack Micallef and Jolisa Osborn-Polakoff were the runners-up. Their pieces will be featured on the Stenhouse blog: http://blog.stenhouse.com/ My best wishes to you all for a great summer! Instrumental Music Notes Thanks to everyone who participated in the Instrumental Music Program this year. It was a huge success! Please remember to return your music and folder to room 101 before leaving for the summer. Thanks! And remember, auditions for everyone will take place the first week of school.
