Hi Jen,
Yesterday the President made comments about ATMs and airport check-in kiosks as one of the reasons for structural unemployment. Below are the actions we have taken to-date and our coordinated on-going response with the Comms group.
GOVERNMENT RELATIONS:
GR conducted outreach that reminded the President’s advisors that self-service technologies are a job creator. From a policy front we contacted the CEO of ITIF, Rob Atkinson, who is writing about this and will circulate his response to journalists tonight/tomorrow. He will point out (in a polite way) why the President's view is incorrect and that self-service technology leads to job creation. In addition to the self-service facts, he will point out that productivity was higher in the 90s when job growth was booming as well as prior to the recession. He will also write, as many studies have shown, that tech-driven productivity actually leads to more jobs. He will also feed to reporters that the BLS is predicting job growth for tellers not decline (605,500 tellers in 2008 growing to 638,000 by 2018) at the national press level.
The U.S. Department of Commerce, under the direction of the President, has already asked NCR to participate in its new Web site highlighting in-sourcing job creation. They have also used us in anecdotes when pitching the media around the in-sourcing jobs push and plan to posts the NCR logo on its job creation Web site along with a brief description of the Columbus plant.
In addition, ATMIA responded with a press release and there is now a Twitter meme poking fun at the President on his comments.
PRESS STRATEGY:
NCR will use the statement below reactively if queried for comment on the President's remarks. As stated above, have also enlisted the aid of the Rob Atkinson of the ITIF, who we will refer reporters to. Rob has a wealth of economic data on the positive impact of self-service on the economy, and will be a powerful third party ally to counter the President's remarks, so NCR will not be in a public position of admonishing the President.
For social media outreach, NCR will selectively re-tweet and promote blog posts by credible, neutral third parties (e.g. Rob Atkinson of ITIF, industry analysts, etc.) through the NCR corporate twitter account. We will avoid re-tweeting and spreading partisan articles and other materials that have a political agenda. We will also re-tweet data and objective factoids consistently, with links back to the original research reports (e.g. data on the increase in the number of bank tellers cited in the Economist article.)
DRAFT HOLDING STATEMENT:
Self-service technologies provide many economic benefits and are powerful forces for job creation, helping companies be more efficient and more competitive. Data cited by the Information Technology & Innovation Foundation shows that if self-service technology were more widely adopted, the U.S. economy would be approximately $130 billion larger annually. NCR is pleased to be part of this positive economic trend, as demonstrated by its creation of 3,000 new jobs for the state of Georgia and its investments to re-shore its ATM manufacturing plant in Columbus, Ga.
Additionally, when the U.S. Department of Commerce posts the NCR logo on its job creation Web site, we will augment our statement with the following:
In concert with President Obama’s ongoing efforts to bolster the US economy and create new jobs, NCR is pleased to be one of the examples highlighted by the US Department of Commerce (DOC) highlighting the competitive advantages of beginning, expanding, and re-shoring business investments into the United States.
