To subscribe, please sign up here (http://bit.ly/ecs1s) . ** Eyes on Raqqa ------------------------------------------------------------ As thousands of Iraqi troops slowly encircle the city of Mosul, Defense Secretary Ashton B. Carter met in Paris today with key coalition members, suggesting that the battle for ISIS’s de facto capital in northern Syria could soon begin, as the Washington Post’s Thomas Gibbons- Neff reports (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/checkpoint/wp/2016/10/25/with-the-battle-for-mosul-underway-u-s-sets-sights-on-isis-capital-of-raqqa/) . Meanwhile, Iraqi forces battled ISIS for a third day in a remote western town far from Mosul today, but the US-led coalition insisted the latest in a series of "spoiler attacks" had not forced it to divert resources from the fight to retake Iraq's second-largest city, as the AP reports (http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2016/10/25/world/middleeast/ap-ml-iraq.html) . Dive Deeper: CFR has a teriffic interactive: “Tracking the War Against Islamic State in Iraq (http://www.cfr.org/global/global-conflict-tracker/p32137#!/conflict/war-against-islamic-state-in-iraq) .” And, CSIS’s Anthony Cordesman recently authored, “The Uncertain Metrics of War Against ISIS (https://www.csis.org/analysis/uncertain-metrics-war-against-isis) .” ** Reconnecting Asia ------------------------------------------------------------ CSIS today launched a new a project and interactive micro-website dedicated to analyzing and mapping the new linkages—roads, railways, ports, and other infrastructure—that are reshaping economic and geopolitical realities across the supercontinent of Eurasia. The website can be found by clicking here: reconnectingasia.csis.org (https://reconnectingasia.csis.org/) ** Calais Migrant Camps ------------------------------------------------------------ Hundreds of migrants, mostly young men from Africa or Afghanistan, lined up in the cold on Monday for buses to take them to temporary housing all over France, as the government set in motion a plan in the port of Calais to clear the sprawling migrant camp known as the 'Jungle' once and for all, as the New York Times’s Mauricio Lima and Adam Nossiter report (http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/25/world/europe/we-are-ready-to-leave-france-clears-out-the-jungle.html) . Dive Deeper: CSIS’s Nellie Bristol today authored a new commentary: “Health Care, Support for Migrants is a Global Responsibility (https://www.csis.org/blogs/smart-global-health/health-care-support-migrants-global-responsibility) .” ** Vote on Iran Sanctions ------------------------------------------------------------ The Republican leaders of the US House of Representatives plan a vote as soon as mid-November on a 10-year reauthorization of the Iran Sanctions Act, congressional aides told Reuters (http://www.reuters.com/article/us-iran-nuclear-usa-sanctions-exclusive-idUSKCN12P2GG) in an exclusive today, setting up a potential showdown with the White House and Senate. Dive Deeper: CSIS’s Sharon Squassoni has produced an interactive timeline (http://jcpoatimeline.csis.org/) on the Iran Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. ** In That Number ------------------------------------------------------------ ** 9,700 ------------------------------------------------------------ The number of soldiers from the California National Guard who have been instructed to repay enlistment bonuses that they received during the height of the Iraq War. In Asia, that order is being remade a bit each day—rail tie by rail tie, lane by lane.” ------------------------------------------------------------ —CSIS’s Matthew P. Goodman and Jonathan E. Hillman on the geopolitical contest underway across the Eurasian supercontinent. Source: Reconnecting Asia (https://reconasia.csis.org/analysis/entries/asias-next-act/) . ** One to Watch ------------------------------------------------------------ Conor Cronin (@ConorCroninDC (https://twitter.com/conorcronindc) ) is a research associate with CSIS’s Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative (AMTI). Brzezinski and CSIS president and CEO John J. Hamre. Reconnecting Asia is the first effort to track ambitious plans for building roads, railways, and other hard infrastructure across the region at the project level. ** CSIS Tomorrow ------------------------------------------------------------ Join CSIS’s Freeman Chair in China Studies at 3:00 p.m. for “China Reality Check Series: Chinese Public Opinion and the Durability of Chinese Communist Party Rule (https://www.csis.org/events/china-reality-check-series-chinese-public-opinion-and-durability-chinese-communist-party-rule) .” ** This Town Tomorrow ------------------------------------------------------------ Join the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace at 9:15 a.m. for “The War in Yemen: Is There an End in Sight? Like the unstoppable duo of Buddy Guy and Junior Wells—both started as sidemen at Chess, helping Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf make electrifying music. But then they became the original Blues Brothers (smile (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWTieCjUhVw) ) forging an unforgettable musical partnership underscored by their synergy on stage and the seamless interplay between Junior’s harmonica and Buddy’s axe. ** Feedback ------------------------------------------------------------ I always welcome and benefit from your feedback.
